I feel frenchy thanks to this comic. Is that bigoted? Should I feel bad and go to sensitivity training?

    I prefer the first panel.

I would totally buy this as a print if it didn't have the caption. Maybe make it a triptych. Do a Heironymus Bosch version and I'll pay you a squijillion dollars for it. Or more than $20 anyway.

I can't tell if I need an explanation, or if this as simple as, "I really wanted an excuse to draw Pacman as certain famous art pieces."

I mean, the second explanation works. The Dali piece is kind of freaking me out.

What is this I don't even.

okay, I'm really impressed with Gabe's ability to emulate those art styles, while still being recognizable as gabe-art.

If people haven't seen it, this is commentary on a recent Namco survey (http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/02/pac-man-survey-asks-users-to-choose-look-of-new-game/) that asked users which of 4 completely wrong-for-pacman art styles they would prefer for an upcoming game.

That Dali version is absolutely fantastic. Seriously though, this is an incredible strip today. I think I have to buy a print.

So the middle one is Piccasso, the right-most one is obviously Salvadore Dali, but who is the first one supposed to be a parody of? The guy who painted The Scream?

  • teknoarcanistteknoarcanist Registered User regular
    Aw man, I want Dali-pacman.

I like the Dali one as well. I also picked the fourth Pac-man in the survey.

I thought the middle one was a sort of Picasso/Cubism blend.

Edvard Munch, yes. I think I need a 3-foot version of this comic on my wall.

Edit: Now that I think about it, the first one sort of also reminds me of "Starry Night" by Van Gogh.

Put me down for a high-res, captionless version as well! Heck, I would buy each panel as a separate print if I could.

I would do unspeakable things for Dali-pacman. I mean look! He even has the mustache!

Hi-res is here! They look pretty. Other interesting things: the first panel is supposed to be Van Gogh, and adorable little Gabe thinks he's the only one who enjoys art.

I've already grown attached to A. So if they change it I might as well flip my own shit! And you don't wanna see my shit flip Namco! My shit will leave you in tears! My shit is the shit of shits! So you best watch out for my shit should you go with any other art style other than A! Otherwise my shit will flip sky high!

God, yes. They need to do one of those limited edition, high quality prints.

I actually really like styles B and D.

haaahaha I didn't notice the Dali moustache until I saw the big versions.

  • K^2K^2 Registered User regular
I've never been a fan of Cubism, so PIcasso is right out. I would lean towards Munch, but the colors are all wrong. The contrasts are just two strong, resulting in strong segmentation of the painting, which prevents it from having the same impact as Munch paintings. So I guess Dali it is.

  • GaslightGaslight Registered User regular
I like B and C of the Namco offerings. A is pretty pedestrian, and D is creative but I have a hard imagining an entire game like that.

    Panel 1, definitely panel 1.

  • brossabrossa Registered User new member
Was the fourth Namco supposed to remind us of a particular artist? I got maybe a John Held Jr vibe from it, but it didn't seem as artist-specific to me as the PA versions. Any art history majors who can comment?

I happily abandon all forum decorum and just want to say the art in this strip is un-fucking-believable. Simply stunning. Bravo, Mike Krahulik.

yo, the art that triggered this comic is rad as hell and I don't get what Gabe's beef is

just gonna file this in the already-prodigious Gabe Has Terrible Opinions folder

  • GaslightGaslight Registered User regular
    edited October 2012
Who said he had beef besides you?

Blog post doesn't say whether Gabe liked or disliked it, actually, just that he had a strong reaction to it and came up with the idea for the comic, whether the reaction was positive or negative is ambiguous the way Tycho wrote it. Tycho is the one who said it "shouldn't exist," whatever that means. Not sure why some people around here are always so eager to rip Gabe when Tycho gets a pass.

PS, and also PSA, the "bad opinions" thing stopped being a funny way of saying you disagree with somebody roughly forever ago.

Not neutral, but it could be either positive or negative.

Begging for a 1920 version of the Munch/Van Goh pac-man. It's more Munch to me.
