I've never owned a PS2 before and this thread (http://forums.penny-arcade.com/showthread.php?t=13211&highlight=chrono+cross) spurred my interest in grabbing some PS2 RPG titles.

I'm nailing FFX right now, what else do you guys suggest?

these suggestion threads have been propogating again lately... we need an easier way of directing people to AFK or something....

dude search for relevant AFK threads or old ones here

or else I suggest going to IGN or gamerankings and looking at the top scoring games there

Final Fantasy XII is a good game.
Suikoden III and Suikoden V are good games too.
    Dragon Quest VIII
    Rogue Galaxy
    Shadow Hearts series
    Valkyrie Profile 2
    Shin Megami Tensei series
    Disgaea
    Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter

Also.. if you like Final Fantasy X and are able to keep a clear mind you can always try Lord of the Rings : The Third Age.. which is prettymuch Final Fantasy X with Lord of the Rings skin...

    Turn-based RPG's:
    Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X-2 (ignore the hate it gets, the battle system alone makes this game awesome)
Final Fantasy XII (a very good game which was held back by the huge amount of content that was cut)
Dragon Quest VIII (fantastic game which is hindered by Toriyama's art, meaning every third person looks the same)
    Suikoden V
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (SMT: Lucifer's Call in PAL-land)
    Shadow Hearts
    Shadow Hearts: Covenant

    Action RPG's:
    Kingdom Hearts
    Kingdom Hearts 2
    Dark Cloud
Dark Cloud 2 (Dark Chronicle in PAL-land)

    Strategy RPG's:
    Disgaea
    Disgaea 2
    Makai Kingdom
    La Pucelle
    Phantom Brave
    Suikoden Tactics
Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter

    AVOID AT ALL COSTS:
    Suikoden IV
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time

Note that I live in NZ, so some games either haven't been released here yet or aren't coming (Rogue Galaxy arrives in June, Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria might arrive later in the year, etc)

Btw Xagarath, sorry but your list sucks. Seriously...

All worthy suggestions especially DQ8, Suikoden V, the Megami Tensei series, and BoF: Dragon Quarter. I'd also add Wild Arms 4 & Grandia 3 - neither has a very good story, but both have awesome gameplay and should be available for under $20 a piece these days.

I don't know if you have ever owned a PS1 or not, but you could pick up FF IX as well, if you can find it. Graphics won't compare to the PS2 games, but its still a good game imo.

lol I agree that FFIX was one of the best RPG's i've ever played. I beat it about 3 years ago.
