What is going on with my CPU temp?

I have an Intel Core Duo 6600.

I was having some overheating issues (or so I thought?) - in BIOS, the temp started off at 70 degrees Celcius. I watched that creep up past 95 and then shut down on me.

I did some playing around (just moving my case around) and finally managed to get into Windows 7 again. (It kept shutting down before I could fully boot into Win7 before, or it would boot in and then shut down a few moments later.)

Anyway, I downloaded a utility called Core Temp. Now my temps are showing:

Core 0: ~41 C
Core 1: ~40 C

Does that mean I'm okay? I'm kind of confused.

    You should probably clean out the dust. Maybe the place you had your case was impeding the airflow?

    Check to make sure all the fans cycle, and it might be time to clean up the old paste and toss on some fresh thermal compound on the CPU.

    I'm actually using some liquid coolant thing...but I think I had to have it elevated and temporarily...didn't. So maybe that was it?

    Either way, I'm doing a full upgrade next weekend after I buy my new CPU. Will probably go with a standard fan setup rather than this cooling system. Thanks guys. :)

    Yeah, it sounds like your setup was not actually cooling for a moment. Maybe the pump wasn't working, or a temporary blockage. Something. But the CPU would not just raise temps like that for no reason while being cooled unless you were actively feeding it more juice (overclocking it). If you're keeping the watercool setup I'd keep an eye on it in case the pump is going. Can also make sure the radiator(s) aren't damaged or filled with crud that might be making heat dissipation more of a problem, likewise for any crimps in the tubing that might impede water flow.

    Fair enough.

    Probably won't be doing any OCing. I think the chip I'll be getting (i7-3770k) will be more than enough without doing any OCing. So I think I'll just go with some normal fans and heatsinks instead.

    @Drez

    the whole point of a -k chip is that you can overclock it. If you don't plan to do any OCing, just get a non-k i7-3770.
