Online vs. Local Multiplayer

Has anyone else noticed that a lot games now have completely replaced local multiplayer? What happened to the days when we used to play games with our buddies on the couch and have smash bros tournaments? I can understand how games can lack multiplayer entirely - sometimes a compelling storyline and amazing gameplay is all that's needed to get the masses to flock to the shelves. But to exclude one entirely SCREAMS bottom line for the industry (MONEY).

I just think that moving away from local multiplayer is a huge slap in the face to the origins of gaming. Of course, online multiplayer has made strides in the course of gaming history. But the purpose of online multiplayer is to connect friends and others people from around the world, no matter where they may be. Now it's more like a way to show off to random strangers how talented you are at being an annoying dweeb.

Thoughts?
