Things to do in Montreal?

A friend of mine is staying there for a while and had not many plans what to do there prior to the visit(visiting family that is also not native to the city).
So apart from the obvious things every tourist would know about or be pointed at, what are the must see/visit things in Montreal?
Any suggestions are welcome, this can be shops, streets or parts of the city with a certain flair, museums, etc...
A car is not available, so suggestions should be limited to the city and not any remote locations.
The old port area is pretty, but chock full of tourists. St. Urbain and St. Laurent north of Sherbrooke are sort of bar-y/restaurant-y, but chock full of McGill students. There are some good museums, and in a couple of months there will be skiing north of the city (I'd imagine you can get a bus to Tremblant from downtown, so the lack if a car won't be prohibitive)... err... does your friend have any specific interests?
I'm floundering a bit here.

I think every suggestion is fine, places where you can go for a walk and have a nice scenery or see some interesting stuff mostly.
