I guess they can't really fuck it up any worse than it already has been. The films I mean, I like that cartoon.

2015 is going to be a fucking insane summer for nerds. Avengers 2, Justice League, Hobbit: There and Back Again and now Star Wars Episode 7?

EDIT: Wait, I'm totally mixed up. There and Back Again is summer 2014. My bad.

I would be so very happy if they made the Timothy Zahn books into a trilogy (or more, there's a lot of material there).

In a weird way, while in any other franchise this would be hard to pull off amid all the cries of "cynical cashing in of the brand", Lucas has already done so much damage, that I actually wonder whther fans might be cautiously optimistic about this?

Here's the official Disney press release:
    https://thewaltdisneycompany.com/blog/disney-acquire-lucasfilm
Great news! The Force is coming to Disney!

Bob Iger just announced that The Walt Disney Company is acquiring Lucasfilm – the global entertainment company founded by George Lucas and the home of the legendary Star Wars franchise. In addition to getting the rights to one of the greatest family franchises and epic stories of all time, Disney is also acquiring all of Lucasfilm’s operating businesses – including Industrial Light and Magic and Skywalker Sound.

Did you know? The Star Wars universe now has more than 17,000 characters inhabiting several thousand planets spanning 20,000 years. This gives Disney infinite inspiration and opportunities to continue the epic Star Wars saga. Fans can expect a new feature film, Star Wars Episode 7, in theaters worldwide in 2015. George Lucas will serve as creative consultant on the film and Kathleen Kennedy, the filmmaker George handpicked to lead Star Wars, Indiana Jones and the rest of Lucasfilm into the future will be the executive producer (she’s also joining Disney as president of Lucasfilm). With this many characters to develop and stories to tell, Disney plans to release a new Star Wars feature film every two or three years for the foreseeable future.

We’ve actually had a great working relationship with Lucasfilm for years -- with Star Wars and Indiana Jones themed attractions in our parks in Anaheim, Orlando, Paris and Tokyo. So, we’re starting with a strong foundation and compatible brands – and the addition of Lucasfilm Ltd. will support our growth strategy and create even more opportunity for Disney to create incredible entertainment and drive significant long-term value for our shareholders.

Bold added by me, but there's really a lot going on in that paragraph.

Big question is: are we canonizing the books (and rewriting as we feel like) or giving them the finger? The cast's age at this point suggests the latter. But they could do something Legacy style and make it WAAAAY after Return of the Jedi. Which would be neat in a "everything should be different" kind of way.

Well okay, maybe the bigger question is: do people actually want this? And my guess is that it does not matter, they will watch it anyway. It honestly seems fine to me, Bond and Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and so on did more than trilogies. It's more about how good the actual movie is rather than if they're "milking the license" or not.

This is a slightly different situation. Lucas sold his shares and now that Kathleen lady is the leader of Lucasfilm. Seems like he may actually be trying to retire/settle down for real. To which I say, yes Lucas PLEASE spoil your kids in your mansions made of gold and leave Star Wars to others. Please.

If they can get some fresh blood into the project (It's heavily apparent the primary source of failure at Lucasfilm has been Lucas himself) I can be optimistic. Especially if they make a conscious effort to only pay lip service to the post-'83 stuff.

I was never huge in to the extended universe, and really, the EU stuff is SO prevalent in every relevant time period, the choice is basically "No more movies" or "Some EU stuff is going to get invalidated"

Hmm... Well I feel a little better then. Hopefully when they creatively consult with Lucas on the new film, they come away from the meetings doing almost everything the opposite of what he says.

The odds of Disney giving half a fuck about the three people who'd cry foul of the EU being invalidated are low.

    Two thoughts come to mind:

-Disney just bought Marvel who now have a very successful movie franchise, so was this really a priority or is Lucasfilms being bought for a steal?

-Instead of looking at it like Disney bought Lucasfilms, does this mean Lucas is now a part of Disney, and will have some say in stuff? (this might be in the articles)

Yeah, but this time he's a creative consultant who doesn't own any of the franchise and other people can actually shoot down his ideas. Apparently Disney paid him 4 billion dollars for the whole kit and kaboodle.

Considering just the worldwide gross for the 6 Star Wars movies (not including merchandising) is more than Disney is reported to be paying for Lucasfilms and all the properties, this sounds like the damn bargain of the century.

Considering Star Wars is already very much present in Disney World, this is not too absurd of a deal.

I still love that video of the asian girl who bows down to Vader and wants to become his apprentice.

The kid is suppose to want to be a Jedi.
