    I remember Loom scaring me as a kid, I don't think I quite understood that it's very hard to "die" in adventure games. I also hated the tomb sections of The Last Crusade game.

    I played some old LA point-n-clicks a few years back. MI 1&2, The Dig, Fate of Atlantis and Full Throttle. Those old game were just so arbitrarily obtuse in some of their solutions. To the point where I spent a good chunk of time with Gamefaqs open. Then I started playing the new TellTale stuff (S&M, MI, BttF) and later, Machinarium. The newer Point-n-clicks have such better (logical?) puzzle design.

    The (impending) release of AC3 has gotten me over the loss of 17 hours of progress in AC2, but I still hoped that somehow when I loaded it up that it would correct itself.

    Alas, it was not to be. And it made me angry all over again at the loss of progress.

    One adventure game I always wanted to play but never did is Blade Runner. Of course it and Grim Fandango (one I was too young to appreciate) are not on GOG or Steam to this day.

    I suspect it was because I was playing it back in July / August when their uPlay service was shitting the bed like a toddler having thai food. And after one Saturday spent playing it, I guess the service was down when it was syncing to the cloud. So instead of saving all the progress for the day, it was lost.

    Argh the terrible downsides of serving the newell so faithfully. My Harddrive is going kaput, and I seriously dread the idea of how many games I'll end up re-downloading. Its terrifying. I bought a vita on tuesday, using up most of my discretionary funds, and now have to pay $130 for a good new drive. Good thing I had most of the halloween games already!

    (AKA TestSubjec23's Guns of Icarus Online Giveaway)
    Prize: Guns of Icarus Online (2 3 copies)

    As a fictional setting, I find Steampunk as likeable as the next guy - something about the mixture of historical nostalgia, specifically the Victorian zeitgeist, mixed with the sense of wonder from science fiction, creates incredibly compelling worlds. Or maybe I just like airships.

    Anyway, since The Difference Engine, I fondly watched as Steampunk developed its own literary niche.
    I was pleased by its momentum as the first self-consciously Steampunk authors started producing novels and games set in such rich worlds.
    I was then wary as Steampunk kept gaining popularity and ubiquity, soon shedding the confined interest of the Cyberpunk and Historical Fiction movements that birthed it.
    And later I was horrified as this otherwise-wonderful setting and style melted into the goth fashion movement, only to splash over into mainstream pop culture in vast gouts of cloying, obnoxious trendiness.
    Steampunk is everywhere these days, bandied about like any other cheap infantile buzzword. We have Steampunk children's shows, and shitty Steampunk props being sold at dollar stores. Ridiculous "Steampunk" versions of any/all other works of fiction or costume ideas crop up like weeds in a garden ("OMG Steampunk Batman! Steampunk Star Wars, you guys! Steampunk Barbie!"). And any jackass with some aviator goggles and gears glued to his tailcoat claims to be "a Steampunk".

    It has, in short, gone from a favourite to a fuck-no.

    And yet, I find myself still drawn to the settings, still compelled by the worlds, still wanting to fly an airship, and blow the shit out of other airships... hence Guns of Icarus Online.

    The Contest:

    To win your very own copy of GoIO (pronounced goy-oh), PM me the silliest, funniest, most mockable or pathetic Steampunk costume or gadget you can find. Full points for schadenfreude.
    Winning entries will be posted in the thread.

    Contest Results

    It was a tough call, but I've picked our winners. Turns out I have three copies to gift, so they go to:

    @kaliyama
    This is apparently old news, but since I hide in my house like a hermit and don't watch E-Talk or anything, I'm not up on my Bieber. All I can say is, oh god the horror.

    This is actually a pretty impressive costume. I can't imagine how much work has gone into it. But that clock.
    flavor-flav-cc08.jpg
    Flavor... is that you?

    @Lochiel
    Pretty sure this guy's being intentionally facetious, but the juxtaposition of his well-coiffed facial hair and that stock gun and terrible goggles is still good for some lulz.
    634869784374130696.w654.jpg
    Bonus image:
    steampunk-wedding-clutch.jpg
    Attaching a clock to something does not make it Steampunk! Dammit, people.

    Honorable mention to @What Is Schwa? for this Etsy monstrosity:
    il_570xN.328971603.jpg
    See above, s/a clock/gears n' shit/
    If I had another copy to give, it'd be yours. (*)

    It's a lot of fun.

    There are some cons, mainly that it's really short and doesn't really offer much variety, but it's more than worth $5 if you want some dumb, gory fun.

    I'll also add that it's got a pretty damn good story, the darkness 2. I never thought it was that repetitious though. You get enough toys to play with.
