Okay, I've been saying that I'll run EP at some point for ages, and I finally had an idea that I think is pretty cool and I'm willing to run. Plus it's time for me to actually get off my arse and actually get stuck into running a proper game. So. Eclipse Phase.
For those who don't know it,
Eclipse Phase is a creative commons RPG focused on transhuman sci-fi horror. Set ten years after Earth was ravaged by the actions of TITANS, Seed AIs who soon after destroying 95% of transhumanity disappeared for unknown reasons, Eclipse Phase allows you to reprogram your mind (ego), swap from customized body to body (or "morph") and is about the actions of a secretive organisation known as Firewall, who exist to protect transhumanity from existence level threats. These threats are many and varied, but are often focused around the potential return of the TITANs and the threat of a multi-form virus known as the Exsurgent virus, capable of changing itself from biological to nanological to electronic as necessary, which re-programs those transhumans it infects to follow new, alien protocols and take strange, horrific forms.
You, the players, will all start off on Mars as Firewall assets (though by no means will you be staying there), not actually active Firewall agents (or Sentinels) yet but more just those who have been contacted, are used for various bits of support work and clear-up, and are yet to start their first Firewall mission (though there is, of course, room for a grizzled veteran who has seen too much and is taking a back seat for the near future to recharge batteries and stay sane).
This is a horror game. There is a sanity type mechanic but I don't really like to use them. As such I'll be relying more on you guys to react properly to what you encounter, and I'm sure I won't be disappointed with the responses! Since real death in a setting like EP is a difficult and concerted effort, psychological impact of trauma is more important (you are more likely to go crazy than die, since your body can be easily fixed, your mind less so).
As I said, the game is Creative Commons and as such downloading, sharing, torrenting and so on of the game is entirely legal, free, and encouraged by the creators. So anyone can get hold of a copy! Just search online and if you can't find one, I'll help point you in the right direction.
Anyway, I'm looking for four to six players for this game (we can go less but that seems unfairly limiting, and more is a bit of a handful). People who are interested can post as such in this thread, and then PM me character ideas and details. I will be using a few house rules which I'll get posted on here, the biggest one being the cost of morphs and availability of starting equipment, though if anyone plays a psi character I'll be rejigging how they work as well (you will, of course, still have to be mad as a hatter to get psy powers). In my games, combat is bloody and savage but also not something just throw in there. Playing a character who is just good in a fight is possible and you can do that if you want, but prior warning this will be a game more focused on investigation and espionage, so you may find yourself not doing much of that sort. That said, a good character can make any set of skills work and I always like just exploring the setting and going on RP tangents, so if you still want to play fred the ultimate killbot, then feel free to nominate him.
So yes, post away if you are interested!

I'll send a real character concept tomorrow.
if you are playing an async then I'll let you know the new stuff, otherwise it's not a big deal
as for morph costs, instead of it being a flat CP cost, instead Morphs will be purchased through credits like all other gear. The cost of the morph is equal to it's suggested cost underneath the CP cost, in credits. An Octomorph, for example, is costed at "Expensive: 30K+" which means it will cost 30CP (what with each CP being worth a thousand creds), as opposed to 50CP.
This means that morphs are cheaper and opens people up to owning multiple morphs, lets you spend more on skills, and fits in the morph costs at character creating with morph costs the rest of the time. All pretty decent benefits, I must say!
Rob Boyle is the writer of the game, and he stuck them all up on his blog! What a lad!
The page is here
as I said, currently on Mars in some way, willing to work for Firewall, that's all I ask.
Charlie Chan does not remember his life from before being sold to the Big Circle Gang. A neoacian African Grey Parrot who was sold to the gang by a nameless corporate executive with a severe drug problem. He has lived on and around mars for as long as he can remember, trained by the Triad as an infilitration specialist, with his small size and flight allowing him to use routes overlooked by most security planners. He is a capable hacker and also utilizes a pair of specially trained smart rats and a smart monkey. His small size and brittle bones has trained him to take the flight part of fight and flight very literally at times. He made contact with Firewall after being hired as a deniable asset in the exfiltration of a kidnapped sentinel. He got along well with his handler and subsequently has been hired for several other small jobs. For his part he is happy to get paid on time and while he knows his contacts in Firewall represent a larger organization he does not know the true mission of Firewall or even its real size.
* get put into the robotic body of a dead friend, run past your own corpse to escape another death, find out you are just a diversion, etcetera etcetera.
Working on my sheet now. Anti-hypercorp Barsoomian terrorist/revolutionary... we'll see what else gets thrown in there during character creation.
EDIT: Orrrr that Lunar biotech/morph design expert. Dammit!
I ended up statting out the morph designer who is now more of a high-fashion specialized biotech genius on the run from Skinaesthesia and working as a low-class body sculptor right now.
Olympian, Sylph, Ruster, Splicer and some kind of robot. I was thinking a slytheroid, flexbot or reaper*.
*For leading peaceful protests with sythamorphs of course.
It's funny that your character has five morphs and adaptability, since I've got all of one morph and the unadaptable trait. At least it's a good one!
I've decided to go with an Olympian, a Sylph, a pleasure pod and a light armor outfitted synthetic.
Are puppet-master sockets with primary beta forks a good idea or should just keep the morphs on ice until needed?
I also bought 10,000 credits worth of XPs.
Anyway, I've got three characters fully statted and when Kirindal gets his character done we'll have four. That's a solid group size so if anyone else is interested in playing such as @Maximus then if they can get their character to me ASAP, that'll be great. I'll work on the starting post today and get it done up tonight with a new shiny IC thread.
Looking forward to getting started! Especially with the group we have, it seems like the characters are nice and balanced, and nobody is stepping on anyone else's toes even by accident, which is cool.
Depends on how much forking you're prepared to do! Personally I like to keep things simple, but since you've got the spare morphs you might as well use them, if you have good character reasons to.
Quick question: my Lunar Flier allows for full flight in the .2 gravity on Luna, what sort of flight capacity does it grant on Mars, if any?
Should I put this kind of thing in the IC thread?
Also apologies for the light posting from me yesterday, it was a friend of mine's stag do and we went airsofting for the day, then for a curry, and then for a night out. When I got back i just crashed entirely. Usually I'll be more frequent with updated though online games do tend to progress at a rather sedate pace.
Also how do you want to play this out? Just a strait up roll or some character interaction?
Also, this is my first ever PbP game (that I've run, anyway) and it's rather different from real time! So if anyone has any advice, suggestions, criticism and so on then they are welcome to give it out, I've always believed that a good GM should be willing to listen to their players and pay attention to their feelings on the game. So pontificate as you see fit!
