I've read through similar problem-with-1/2-posts on the forums here and elsewhere, but they've been unhelpful to me because all I own are Macintosh computers.
Like many others, I wanted to replay Episodes 1 and 2 when I got off the high of finishing 3. I bought them from Greenhouse a bajillion years ago when they first came out. Unfortunately, I have new computers since then, and I can't locate my old registration keys. I re-downloaded the demos, and was fully prepared to buy new codes, but found that both Greenhouse and Hothead are defunct in the Penny Arcade department. I did send a request for replacement keys to Greenhouse support for the heck of it, but haven't heard back.
That option apparently a dead end, I saw that I could download them for Steam. I double and triple checked that they would play on a Mac, and bought the bundle. But they are failing to start up. So here we are, at my actual question, is there any way to make them play? Here's what's wrong:
Machine 1 is a iMac, 10.6.8, Machine 2 is a Macbook Air, also 10.6.8. Plenty of space, ram, no CPU clogging. Fully updated, all other programs closed.
Steam starts up fine and the games appear to download/install fine. Steam is up-to-date. When I click "play," a window pops up that says "preparing to launch," but then the window disappears and the game has not started. Repeating the process yields the same results, but now it says "last played..." on top, so it seems to think I opened it. Same thing on both machines. I turned to the steam FAQ/forum for help. Though they even have a topic called "Games do not run after 'preparing to launch,'" the troubleshooting there was unhelpful, nor were the fixes proposed on the forum (all for PC). I sent a help request to Steam, have yet to hear back.
So, is there perhaps anyone out there who might know what I can do? Anyone have this kind of problem and find a solution? Does anyone even play games on macs, or am I the only, uh, "silly goose" who does?
I would really love help, because I'm terribly disappointed that there is no way for me to play either of these awesome games anymore. Thanks very much.

Really hope you find an answer because I'm in the same boat. I've been trying to play episode 1 since August and have the same issue where it says it's starting and then nothing happened. I tried Steam support and they attempted to help, but when that failed they referred me to Hothead Games. I sent their support an email in September and haven't heard anything back at all.
If I open applications->utilities and run "console" it will show additional errors.
If I start from Steam I get something like the following:
