I wasn't sure if this belonged more in this forum or the H/A forum, but essentially I volunteered to DM a group in Pathfinder. The catch is that I haven't DMed anything since AD&D.
Pathfinder was recommended by one of the group and we'd all like to try it out. However, in looking at the books on Paizo and on Amazon, there seem to be a lot of books and it's difficult for me to tell which ones are more critical to get.
My intuition is that the DM screen would be really nice for quick reference, and I'm not going to rules lawyer as a DM, but if there's going to be some sections of a book/books/places that I am going to be consistently referencing while DMing, I'd like to buy that as an actual book and keep costs down by getting pdf versions of the rest.
Do you have any advice/experiences with DMing Pathfinder and insights into which books/sections of which book tend to be most critical? Is getting the DM screen for this a worthwhile idea?
Note: I'm not going to run any completely pre-made campaigns, I already have some ideas for what I'd like to do, but if there are pre-made campaigns that have really fantastic elements I'm not averse to buying one or two to steal and integrate into the adventure I have in mind.
Thanks!
