Test Drive Unlimited - PC

Not sure how many people have been following this one but the game was released on the 16th in Europe and will be released on the 20th in Amelicaland.

Test Drive Unlimited is being billed as a new Massively Open Online Racer (MOOR) which has already enjoyed a lot of success on the xbox360. It's now come to a bunch of other platforms including the PC and the PS2.

Game wise, it plays out as some weird hybrid driving/racing/lifestyle sim. You land on the Hawaii island of O'ahu with $200,000, renting a car allows you to visit the real estate dealer and buy your first piece of property. After that it's down to the car dealers to make your first purchase and once you have that set of wheels the game pretty much leaves you to your own devices. The islands road networks were modelled using satellite data, they even include a roadmap in the box for you.

Cruising around the island gives you access to a bunch of missions where you can earn more cash (to buy cars andhouses) or fashion tokens (to spruce up your wardrobe). These range from the standard race and timeattacks, to the slightly bizarre speed traps (get clocked at the highest possible speeds at a set of speed cameras). To the hilarious BMW ad/Crazy Taxi inspired model/package drops. If you really need some cash there's always the car delivery missions, simply drive from A-B with no time restrictions. Sounds easy? Not when you get sat behind the wheel of a ferrari enzo, every scrape of the car might lose you money, but the temptation to gun the engine up to full can sometimes be a little too tempting.

+ve sides
-MMO racing
-Free roaming
-Pretty
-Amazing selection of cars to drive

-ve sides
-Single core coding so the game is pretty slow (E6600@2.6/8800GTS and fairly low framerates at the high reses)
-Draw distances could be improved
-Doesn't fully support X360 pad (can get rumble with the homebrew drivers though)
-Really hard to get a multiplayer race going for some reason.
-Weather seems limited to cloudy, and no day/night cycles.

Anyone else playing this or got anythoughts questions?

I have it for 360, It's really good for just driving round taking in the eye candy with your custom soundtrack, The races are kinda meh against the A.I as they brake too hard around the corners.
Tour of the island (Race) was my fav, a 45 min race.

I like to think of it as Oblivion for cars :)

I have an Audi DSG, a low-price Jaguar XK coupe, and $146,000. That classic cars dealership down the road is out of stock on the $150,000 Jaguar XJ-220, but I'll be sent a note when it's available. And then... and then, it'll all be mine.

The Miura is also a thing of beauty.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what cars to buy. I've been going for stuff I really like, like the Lotus Espirit and that Jaguar. But I wouldn't mind being told what the best in class actually was cause I'm sure as hell it's not the ones I'm buying.

Well, there's some bargains to be made, especially with Chevrolet and, surprisingly, Ferrari. Look up the dealerships on the map and try them - you can get quite fast cars for very little. I don't like Chevrolet myself, but I'd be getting one Ferrari car in particular if it weren't for the fact that I found the XJ-220...

I'm all over this. I jumped at the chance to download the game from Atari on the 5th, but that launch went less than stellar. Basically, the version they put up worked on maybe 5% of the machines, whereas the DVD version which was already released in Europe worked flawlessly. It took them a few days to finally admit their mistake, they shipped everyone that purchased the digital copy a DVD copy of the game along with some nice discounts on future Atari purchases.

I'm at Champion rank with about 70% of the roads explored, 45% game completion, 4 houses and about 25 cars.

My favorites are the Ford GT, Lotus Exige and Ferrari Enzo.

Man, no kidding. The handling is so far removed from reality I'm not sure why they bothered to have them in the first place.

Other than that the game is pretty fun, but I played enough of it during the open beta that I don't feel like buying it.

Played this some today. I think I did 2 races and then spent the rest of the time just driving around. Overall, it's not a bad game. I really like the interiors of the cars, and it's nice to have a true in-car view, even though it's hard to use (one of those head movement sensors would really help, I think). The interface is kind of clunky, but useable.

The only really glaring thing I've found is that I can't seem to go in reverse. I'm using a steering wheel/pedals setup and automatic transmission. Holding down the brake only... holds down the brake, and binding a key to Reverse Gear and pressing it does nothing. I also can't manually shift down past neutral. I'm sure I'm missing something, but I need to spend a little more time with it.

Edit: Figured out the Reverse thing. Apparently my pedals weren't calibrated correctly and it was constantly giving a small bit of gas. I thought this was just the behavior for an automatic, but it was preventing me from switching to reverse since I was technically still trying to go forward. It's working fine now.

I bought a Logitech Driving Force Pro solely for this game, but I just found it to be unbearable. I used it for nearly 2 weeks, but everything handles so much worse with it. I tried a lot of different combinations of Force Feedback Settings/Sensitivity/and 200° to 900°... I still seem to have much more control with my keyboard.

Didn't wanna create a new thread for a game with little to n information on it but...
ATARI HAVE ANNOUNCED TEST DRIVE UNLIMITED 2!
Out toward the end of the year. Once we get a little more info on it, be sure that I'll create a thread specifically for it, but for now, this ones alright. Loved the first btw, Screw that racing, I just drove around.

This is one of those games that never comes off my hdd even though I only play it about three times a year. Whenever I get the urge to go for a drive late at night, I'll grab my g25 and just cruise around. I'm looking forward to the sequel - hopefully they will fix some of the pc issues the last version had after the patch.

Likewise - the game hasn't left my hard drive since the day of release. I don't play it that often either, but I still enjoy it when I do. It may not be an exciting car in reality, but oh man, the Audi A6 in the game is lovely to drive.

    Wish I had a G25, though. Bastard.

Ditto on the sitting on my hard drive too!

I just like pretending to drive faster cars than I'll ever be able to afford.
I hope they make another map based on a real island. I could totally drive around the Hawaiian Island (whose name I've forgotten) if I were put there IRL.

I just hope they get rid of all the stupid clothing and house buying crap. I didn't enjoy any of that at all. I mean, the housing was horrible, because you'd store cars in other houses, and then have to magically warp there to drive them. I understand that that might be slightly more realistic, but I don't think i'll ever be owning any property at all on an exotic island, let alone MULTIPLE for my fleet of cars.
And I never did anything with the gear. I just thought that was a way for in-game advertising, really. At least they didn't have you decorate your house....

I would also really like if they made it modular like they said they were going to, where you could actually add your own cars, instead of straight up overwriting them if you wanted a different car. I don't know about you guys, but if the Mercedes in the game are like they are in real life, they're completely worthless. I'm glad that there were other cars you could use that overwrote them. I would just like the idea to actually add on cars, or different courses, instead of using the horrible method of dropping files on top of the pre-existing ones.

Yeah, if it was available on steam I'd likely have already bought it, but as it stands I have not. Enjoyed the 360 demo, and I have a Logitech G25 wheel I'd love to try on it, but there were a few let-downs in the game design that I'd like to see fixed in TDU2.

Also, I love that it's got motorcycle racing too. I played the first one right around the time I was starting to get into motorcycle riding, really got me curious about other motorcycle racing games.

I put so much hours into the first one. And did very little racing, it was so relaxing. The beta for the sequel ran horribly on my PC, a lot of slow down and there were very few options to adjust the visuals too making it difficult to scale it to my rig's spec. That said it was a beta and hopefully it's all ironed out now.

The first game did get a demo too so here's hoping the sequel gets the same treatment. If I still had my 360 I'd nab the game instantly.

I played the first one a while, liked it pretty well although it had lots of little annoying things about it. Like the way terrain was modeled making driving in hills a giant PITA, and the vehicle delivery missions, and assholes in Enzo Ferraris challenging me to duel races in my Mustang GT, and the complete inability to customize your cars beyond paint job, not to mention the lack of support and DLC for the PC version.

Didn't help that at the time I had a very borderline PC to run it.

Nevertheless, I've been monitoring the sequel's development for a while because the concept of the game is unbeatable for me, and I even got an invite to the beta except I could never get it to accept my code and actually play, which I guess might be a bad sign. :P Probably going to end up getting this very soon if not actually at release tomorrow unless I hear some really bad things to scare me away.

I loved the first one, and had this one pre-ordered for a while. Even if I don't get to play it immediately because my computer is a piece of shit, I'll still play the crap out of it one day.

One thing I ended up doing with the original that I loved, and will probably try to reproduce with the sequel, was take out traffic and cops. I thought it was just fun to drive around the island in just about any car, without said traffic or stupid cops. Maybe I'm fantasizing a bit too much, but I thought they way they implemented the cops was waaay too annoying, and the traffic was far too stupid to be of any good. I get what they were going for, but it just felt dumb. So I took them out.

The only thing that I hope they've improved is the viewing distance. Even with maxxed out settings, you could still only see 300 feet in front of you, and when you're doing a decent speed, that's not far enough to see where you need to be going.

Also, the preorder car skin looks sweet.

Dammit, I just made the mistake of watching beta gameplay videos on YouTube and, welp, now I've pre-ordered the thing and I don't even care about the bonus Pagani paint job. :P

It wasn't even race gameplay videos, either, just people driving around. If the actual competition modes are even halfway decent I figure I can probably get my $40 worth just virtually cruising. I hope that they release more classic cars as DLC later on, assuming they don't go the route of the first game and NFSHS and screw the PC on DLC entirely...
