Patch installed? Check.

Compatibility mode? Check.

Tried on a win98 machine? Check.

Still crashes in the first two seconds of gametime? Check.

HELP!

Odd, I played this on XP and never had any trouble running it.

When was the last time you got it working? On what machine?

This is just a guess but the whole "it runs for x amount of time and crashes" thing is usually a sign that the game is incompatible with dual core processors. You don't by chance have one do you?

If so, a quick way to test if this is the problem is to the load up the game and then alt-tab, ctrl-alt-delete, right click it's process and set it's affinity to cpux0. Then see if you can get farther in the game. Then you can patch the executable to automatically start with the core affinity set. If so open up notepad and paste this in

    imagecfg -u file.exe
    imagecfg -a 0x1 file.exe

With "file" replaced with the name of the Sanitarium executable (probably Sanitarium.exe). Then save the file and change the extension to .bat. Go to the command prompt, get to that directory and run the bat file you just made. Also back it up just in case.

Yeah, this game crashed all the time on me too. Never got to finish it because of that. I don't remember if I had disabled Hyperthreading or not.

If you figure it out, I'd sure like to know.

    I don't have a dual core.

I never got it running, this is the first time I had this game.

    p4 1.8ghz
    ~750mb ram
    ati radeon 9600 pro

    uh.

The problem might be Windows 98 is a pile of shit.

Do you get a specific error? That would help tremendously in figuring out the problem.

on my XP, the colours around the character go all screwey and then it gives me the generic Windows 'program has run into a problem' dialog box.

On my 98 dual-boot, it gives an error code and a thrown exception and 'invalid world'

    Nope.

I think it might not play well with DX9 -- i'm going to try it on the ancient machine to my left.

You don't have dual core, but you probably do have Hyperthreading, which acts like two processors. My system is

    P4 2.4 Ghz
    1 gig Ram
    Radeon 9600 (mobile)
    Windows XP

so it's pretty close to yours, and I had the exact same problems with Sanitarium. But, like I said, I don't remember if I tried disabling Hyperthreading or not. That's usually the reason my computer crashes with old games.

    In your BIOS settings.

You'll take a performance hit in newer games, but stability in older games gets a lot better.

Does your device manager show 2 items in the Processors section?

Meatflower's tips work for Hyperthreaded processors also. Without having to disable it in the BIOS.

    No.
Then you're processor isn't Hyperthreaded, and you don't need to worry about it.

You can also tell if it's hyperthreaded if you play a game of CSS or HL2 and open a console it will say 2 CPUs detected (1 virtual) or some shit like that.

    maybe. I think.

I don't have dual core/hyperthreading/or anything else fancy yet had this exact same issue with the game.

Without going into specifics, after "installing" it so that no cds are required to play at all, it worked without a hitch. This is from (maybe four years ago or so?) the bargain re-release version you see in Best Buy/etc. for five dollars.
