Found out today is my last day at job, should I just leave now?

I'm 2 hours into my last 24 hour shift here at the mortuary. As I came in this morning, the last person on call asked how I felt about this being my last day....I didn't know that it was.

A bit of backstory, I was told to shape up and change my negative attitude or risk losing my job two weeks ago. A week after that, I was told even though I seemed much happier, the hole I dug was just too deep and to start looking for another job. I'm also an apprentice embalmer and was told I could finish working my cases needed to get licensed (which I have until May. Didn't think I'd be there That long, but still).

I'm a little peeved that my boss wouldn't let me know I was really gone before everybody else, and really don't see the point sticking around for another 22 hours, but at the same time, I don't want to look like a jerk and leave my friends/co-workers hanging.

Any thoughts?

So you've decided that from one silly goose's comment that this is your last day?

I would contact your boss - even if that means calling home/cell - and ask if it's true before doing anything. If they're not available, contact whoever makes up your HR department.

Are you absolutely sure you've been fired and that your co-worker didn't get his facts wrong?
Before you walk out and burn your bridges behind you, you need to at least contact your boss and find out whats going on.

The last thing you want is to get fired for walking out due to one persons comments.

Stick it out. You never know what might happen in the future. Finish your duties, say "thank you very much for the opportunity, i've learned a lot". Then leave with class.

Yeah, I sent my boss a text asking if this was it and he said yes, though he would like to talk to me once I clocked out tomorrow morning. I got him to move that meeting up to 3pm today, and I'm a little curious what he's going to say.

The new schedule is out am I'm missing from that as well.

That's a shitty way to find out Svenska. Hope things work out for you.

As for advice, I'm just echoing MagicToaster when I say stick it out. It's one day. Walking out early is only going to make it really hard to get a reference from them in the future.

Yeah, I think I'm going to at least stay till 3 to have this meeting. I need to talk about my last check and stuff anyways.

After that? Idk. I'll see what happens.

    Thanks everybody

I will usually give references to people who handle being terminated well, because very few people that I've had to terminate wouldn't fit SOMEWHERE even if they weren't right for my organization. One of the last impressions someone can leave is, "Did they work out their last shift, did they leave without making a big fight out of it, etc."

That said, I think I also try to hold up my end of the bargain with people I terminate, by being fair, honest and helpful even after they've left. So, whether you pull a 24 hour shift or not sort of comes down to what you think you'll get out of it.

Bear in mind, of course, that I bet embalming is a field where most people know everyone else. If this is a field you hope to stay in, you probably want to do your best to leave on good terms, where your boss won't badmouth you to anyone who asks later down the road.

What is this I don't even.

Staying might not make it better, but burning bridges definitely won't make it any better.
