Quick Question: Turning an .aa file into a .MP4 file

CoJoeTheLawyerCoJoeTheLawyer Registered User regular
Question for the technically savvy on the PA Forums: Does anyone know of a reliable, non-shady free-ish program that can covert .aa files (audiobook files) to .MP4 or .MP3 files? I switched phones, and the new phone will not play the .aa files, and I would hate to lose the books-on-MP3s I currently purchased

Thanks in advance

That's the wrong thing. .aac is lossy audio encoding, the successor to mp3.

.aa is Audible.com's proprietary audiobook format that includes encoded DRM to restrict it to certain playback devices.

I'm going to err on the side of caution and not link DRM busting software here, but there is an ehow.com tutorial for converting .aa to .mp3. It includes links to 2 different software downloads that you can try. I have no experience with either, so good luck!

    It appears you're correct.

My link still might be helpful to get a general idea of what needs to be done.

my roundabout ghetto method has always been to open the (not .mp3 here) in Audacity and save it as an mp3.

Audacity is free, as is the LAME mp3 codec add-on you'll need for this.
