Mortal Kombat

You know, if it wasnt for MK fighting games would probably still be configured in home versions spewing sweat instead of blood and probably be forgotten completely even if ttitles like Street Fighter 2 were highly popular when they came out. Midway had always have this thing of pushing the envelope and being the ones behind Smash TV and NARC, it was no ssurprise that Mortal Kombat would be a pretty violent version of any fighter videogame that was out at the time. I remember when I first saw the first MK arcade at a grocery store. I was never one to consider live actors digitized and having played games like Pit Fighter I wasnt that impressed. But once a guy pulled Sub Zero's fatality I instantly got engaged into it. It was when MK II came out that I became a total fan of the series. I still think its the best in the entire series. MK was also responsible for Congress urging to have a rating in Videogames, ironic in my opinion. So whats your memorable moment from the MK games?

Mortal Kombat 2011 had the best story in any fighting game and the best story in the overall MK media. It was pretty sweet, almost like a non-crappy Mortal Kombat 3 movie was made. Johnny Cage was my favorite character.

MK 2011 was, by far, the best fighting game release. So much content in that game.

MVC3 was a serious kick in the nuts in terms of value.

While Mortal Kombat was certainly a poster boy for video game violence, there were other violent video games which were discussed. I think it was a product of being in the right place at the right time - that's when a lot of uproar about the content on TV and in music was building up. Remember that the parental advisory warning hit CDs in that same era. Night Trap was another game that was used as an example of morally-unacceptable video games, although I personally think Night Trap is more trashy than violent (and a terrible game, too). I think, had Mortal Kombat not come along, Doom would have probably been the game to push everyone over the edge.

But I still love mortal kombat. I have the actual arcade PCBs for the first two games (with the challenger mod for the second), along with numerous ports of the original trilogy across a variety of systems. Of the originals, MK2 is far and away my favorite, and I prefer the 32X port of that game if I'm not playing the arcade version.

The new Mortal Kombat is my favorite in the entire series, though. It also has the best story of any fighting game I've ever played, and a hell of a single player campaign.

I love the MK series. MKII is still my favorite fighting game from that time period - but yes, the new MK topped it. It plays so well, and just does everything right. The only thing I really miss with it would be there really wasn't anything truly hidden.

The only thing I don't like is that they seem to keep going back to MK1/2/3 for characters and don't seem to take the time to tweak the ones from the PS2 era games. Some of them actually had promise but often just lasted one game with no real chance to become a vital part of the series. I would have loved to see Havik get redone and think Hsu Hao would have been brilliant as a Dan-esque joke character. They seem to let that generation of characters and story sort of disappear.

I think most of the newer characters were pretty shitty anyway. I mean there's a few characters that I think they could flesh out decent backstories and moves, but I think I'd rather they just create new characters and try to make them memorable. I think it would be easier for them and more efficient to start from scratch rather than trying to do an entire reboot on a character.

Pretty sure Boon agrees with you otherwise he wouldn't be bringing back the 1-3 cast with the occasional person from 4-9. (Like Noob and Kenshi)

I wonder if NRS will be releasing an ultimate edition after they finish Injustice, or just move straight on to the next MK game? I guess it'll depend on how much life they think is left in this console generation.

There was a huge amount of content cut or simply unavailable for the console version of the game as it stands.

Off the top of my head:

*A complete set of MK1-3 Retro Ninja outfits for all the ninjas. Only a few are available in the console version as DLC, though more are available in the PSP Version.
*Alternate costumes for Skarlet and Kenshi were also added in the PSP version (actually Skarlet's is on the console disc as well, just not 100% complete and never implemented).
*Two Challenge Tower NPCs were planned but never made the cut (an Oni and a Black Dragon Thug). The Oni is in the game as a background creature, but the Black Dragon Thug wasn't used at all.
*Goro and Kintaro both have bios and endings in the game data, as well as spots in the code for Fatality Trainer (though they only list placeholder text instead of Fatality descriptions), indicating that they may have been intended to be playable at one point. A magazine also falsely reported Kintaro as playable at one point when showing him next to Kenshi. Shao Kahn is similar but did not have an ending in the code.
*There are voice files in the game of Shao Kahn saying "Brutality" and Ed Boon confirmed that they were working on Brutalities but weren't able to get them done in time (they were rumored to be finishing moves that utilized the X-Ray cutaways like the X-Ray attacks).
*The code also has references to an "Endurance Mode." Based on the details available, it would have been a survival mode.
*Additionally, it seems like they were originally planning (at least for the potential of) a lot more DLC before they ran into a compatibility problems. In addition to announcements about new characters for download, the code also has announcements for new costumes, new arenas, and new fatalities. DLC Fatalities is also something the developers had talked about prior to release.
*Speaking of arenas, there was a Volcano Arena shown in some of the trailers but is not present in the game in any form. The Shaolin Temple that Liu Kang is from also appears in story mode (Tarkatan Invasion at the start of the MK2 segment) and has a spot that looks like could serve as an arena, but it never does anywhere in the game.
*There is evidence that Fujin was originally supposed to be the 4th DLC character, and that Freddy & Jason were going to be released as a combo pack for Halloween. Instead, due to unknown reasons (poor DLC sales? increasing compatibility issues with each new pack?), Fujin and Jason were dropped and Freddy got promoted to 4th DLC character and is released in August as the "final" DLC.
*While there is no evidence that more Story Chapters were planned, only the "good guys" got Story Chapters in the game, leading some to speculate that a "bad guys" story mode was originally intended for the other half of the cast that missed out.

And that's without even getting into "new" stuff they could add for a potential Ultimate edition.

I thought they already did their "Ultimate" release with the Komplete Edition (Disc + DLC codes).

Though I would really like to see some of that stuff (like Jason, more outfits & arenas, bad guy story).
