Grid overlays that will print

I need to overlay a pretty small grid over an image, and then I need it to print that way. Using MSPaint won't print the grid, and printing on graph paper (as recommended by my husband) will print on top of the grid, and neither of those things are useful. I'm thinking about taking multiple screenshots of the image with the grid in Paint, but that way will only make trouble for me later so I'd like to find a better way.

Anyone know of a way to do this that is.. well.. free?

I don't really know anything about the program, but Gimp is free and I'm pretty sure has layers/transparency.

It weird, you would think I would know more about this, but because I just use photoshop I don't know any of the free options.

Paint.net does transparency & layers also, and is free

Okay, I think I may have this figured out. If it just isn't working I'll give paint.net a try.

My impression of Gimp is that it's a non-MS version of Paint, and Paint wouldn't print the grid, but I'll give it a try.

    Thanks!
