Ripping DVDs

So, yeah, this is like the umpteenth thread I've made.

I have a few tools: ImToo DVD Converter, Xilisoft DVD Converter, Cucusoft something which creashes my system, and so on.

Some movies come out choppy no matter what I do. I tried converting Battlestar Galactica recently and it's really choppy.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong, or a better tool suggestion?

Thread over. AutoGK is the best for this.

AVI won't work. Does this only rip to Xvid/Divx? I'm ultimately putting this on my Zune, so it has to be in MP4 or WMV format.

    MP4 you say? Handbrake!

It used to be Mac/Linux only but there's a brand new Windows port, which I assume is what you use. It's really excellent. Assuming the Windows port is even remotely as good as the Mac version, I think you'll really like it.

I've been messing around with Handbrake, but for some reason it will simply not read all the titles on this DVD. The Battlestar Galatica (dual layer) DVD only has four or five titles, but Handbrake will only read title 2, which is not the full movie.

Hmm, that's really strange. I've used HandBrake to rip all sorts of TV show DVDs and I've never had trouble getting it to read all the titles. In recent memory, the only problem I had was getting it to rip a copy of Terminator 2 extended edition. It cut out somewhere in the middle for some reason (I suspect it was the title's ~80 chapters that did it) but I was able to resume ripping where it left off with the chapter range selection menu and use Quicktime Pro's neat MP4 repackaging feature to rejoin the segments into one file without reencoding.

I wish I had a copy of the DVD both to watch and see if it's a platform specific issue with the ripper.

Check around http://www.doom9.org/ and http://www.videohelp.com/. They should have some guides for you.

This is always a good idea because it reduces wear on your DVD drive and makes experimentation a whole lot faster.

The new Handbrake is called Mediafork. If you haven't tried it, it should be better than Handbrake.

    Mediafork remerged with Handbrake.
