I have a similar setup. I plug the hdmi to the monitor (that carries video AND audio), and then I have a regular cable (3.5mm jack to 2 audio RCA plugs) so I get the sound from the monitor headphones jack, to the sound system.
I use the same sound system for both the PC and the XBOX. So I use two adapters (Two RCA females to 1 RCA male) to plug everything to the same sound system. I hope its not confusing.
Yes, with a quick verbal "boom." You take a man's peko, you deny him his dab, all that is left is to rise up and tear down the walls of Jericho with a ".....not!" -TexiKen

Here is what I personally do and I didn't have to buy anything extra:
Did that so I could plug in HDMI with the standard A/V plug, and ran that HDMI cable to the HDMI input on my monitor. Then I plugged the audio cables from the Xbox plug into the auxiliary inputs on my speakers, bypassing my soundcard entirely. My only complaint is you can't switch inputs on the monitor to swap back and forth from Xbox to PC without the Xbox resetting when you switch back (HDMI security crap).
Thanks guys, those are all really neat ways i didn't think of.I actually do not own a pc tower so i wont have the problem of having to switch back and forth.I have to do this because im moving into an even smaller room that i had and to fit everything i wanted to downgrade to a smaller screen size.My TV is a VIZIO 32" and im going 24" or 27" widescreen.Plus i heard monitors dont have as much lag as some TVs that can have 16 or 20ms .I can see it ghost a bit in my TV at least.
