Trade or Sell a Guitar (Guitar Center)

Hey all, I've got an extra bass guitar (Fender if I recall) that I was thinking about getting rid of for a Yamaha F335 Acoustic. I paid about $100 for the Fender bass when I bought it off a roommate a couple years back. Seems like it's in good shape but I don't know anything about bass and am looking to trade it in to learn a normal 6 string.

My question is, if I were to take it into Guitar Center (or another music store in Seattle), what should I expect to get for this thing? I'm trying to decide if I should list it on Craigslist instead.

$50 bucks if you're lucky. They like selling used items at huge profit.

Yeah, you'll get completely fleeced if you go to GC. Try taking it to a local guitar shop and have them take a look. Sometimes places like that will deal in used instruments; at the very least, you'll probably be able to ask them what they think and if the thing needs work done on it, and you should be able to get a decent idea of what it's worth.

To find out what you have read what it says on the headstock. You should be able to just search ebay/craigslist for what it says on there and get an idea what it would go for.

Based on what you paid for it, I'd guess you've got a Squier Affinity bass (which often includes the Fender name on the headstock). If you've kept it in good shape and the neck hasn't warped or anything, you should be able to get $80ish for it on craigslist.

The general rule of thumb when trading in gear at a Guitar Center or similar store is that you start at 25% of street price and then go down from there based on condition and market demand. You will always do better with a direct sale.

Try trading it to someone on the list of Craig.

Sell it on your own. I've been in that business for almost 9 years and can tell you that any dealer GC or local will quote you half of what they think they can sell it for.
