Man I'm excited for this movie but I thought from this thread title that Stephen Moffat was making a crime series in the Trek Universe

    which is way more exciting

So it's been nearly four years since the last one

Abrams' Star Trek was soooo good and I was thinking "This will kickstart me into watching Star Trek!"

And then I watched the pilot of TNG on Netflix and that was it

    It was good

It just didn't compel me to watch more for some reason

watching the 2009 Star Trek made me glad that my Trekkie friend made me watch a select few Trek movies like Khan and First Contact (and even Generations).

The TNG pilot isn't very good. In fact, the entire first season is pretty bad. I'm trying to think of an episode that is good enough to catalyze someone into watching more and I keep thinking "The Measure of a Man" but I'm not sure it'd be a good starting point.

Eh screw it, go watch "The Measure of a Man." It's one of the best episodes of TNG and if you don't like it you probably won't like the rest.

    I liked it

Usually when people say the first season of something is pretty bad, I still end up liking it

The Office, Parks and Rec, Babylon 5

Maybe it's just easier for me to see the potential in shit

I didn't even notice that was the shape of the hole.

I blame my small laptop monitor for not letting me see it all without scrolling.

Also that episode "Cause and Effect" if you like time shenanigans. I think that's what it's called, basically the Enterprise is stuck in a time loop that ends in it getting destroyed and they keep playing the same game of poker? The episode is basically the same sequence of a handful of events carried out with a few variations like 8 times over the course of the episode.

I also really dig "The Next Phase" but I wouldn't advocate watching that one until you get to know the characters, so there's more emotional impact. The odd thing is that the best episodes all have very little to do with cool sci-fi battles or anything like that, it's always the character episodes. Another one to try is "The Ensigns of Command."

    So (discussing possible spoilers below)
Reading the official synopsis that came out with the poster, I'm basically not seeing the Gary Mitchell connection at all

Really still sounds exactly like Khan to me, even though they've said he won't be

And I'll be disappointed if they awkwardly try to mash the two together

If it is Gary Mitchell, I'm hoping for a big ol' Q connection, including a John DeLancie appearance. Because really if Q secretly gave Mitchell his power, that makes way more sense than the original version of his origin.

Also Q would totally be aware of the two realities and mention stuff from the future and things of the sort and maybe name-drop Picard at some point aaah that would be so cool

Is that a common fan theory about Mitchell? I always thought the presumed Q connection was Trelane.

Trelane is pretty much fanon-accepted as being a Q now, but I don't think I've ever heard anything specifically of Mitchell. It's just that there being a barrier at the edge of the galaxy that turns people into omnipotent superbeings is capital-D Dumb. I'd rather this whole deal just be a Q trick.

Looking forward to more spaceship fights

The 2009 Star trek was a super good movie, but if there's one thing I felt it kinda missed it was having a decent ship to ship fight. The opening section got me super on board with how pretty it all was

I was kinda hoping this one would be the Big Ol' Klingon Movie we've always desperately needed, too (ST3 does not count). Maybe the third one.

But I hoped they'd bring the Borg back for the third one.

Since no one else is saying it; that poster feels very generic, and really doesn't do much for me because we've had destroyed-buildings-in-the-shape-of-a-logo since Dark Knight Rises got teased.

I don't really think Cumberbatch is a big deal and I couldn't give two shits whether he is in the movie or not (he's not bad or anything I just don't particularly think he's great either)

but I fucking love new Star Trek so woooo bring it on
