Fiber is terrible!

ShadowfireShadowfire Vermont, in the middle of nowhereRegistered User regular
So my doctor has told me to use a fiber supplement every morning when I get up due to some issues I've been having. This is in addition to the fruit, veggies and whole grains I've been working into my diet. Problem is, the fiber supplements I've used are fucking gross. They taste like crap, even the orange flavored ones, and feel like I mixed some dirt in my water and drank it down.

Is there such a thing as a fiber supplement that doesn't taste like ass?

See if you can get an actual script. That will come as a pill. So much better than mixes.

If you take a look at how much fiber is in a fiber supplement vs. how much is in something that is just high in fiber, its not that different. You could just eat something like a granola or cereal bar that is high in fiber already.

Also, fruit leather (fancy fruit rollups) generally are pretty high in fiber. Trader joe's sells an extra fiber version of them that isn't bad. Mostly tasteless, but fruity enough to be easily edible.

You should talk to your doctor regarding the taste, maybe he could recommend another brand. Do not change it at will, that kind of fiber is normally used to correct bowel problems by causing bulkiness and forcing the colon to work as it should.

Hear my warnings, unbelievers. We have raised altars in this land so that we may sacrifice you to our gods. There is no hope in opposing the inevitable. Put down your arms, unbelievers, and bow before the forces of Chaos!

No, he didn't recommend a brand, he just said "you should use a fiber supplement to help this."

And Wassermelone: like I said, this is in addition to the fiber I'm eating in my diet (5 fruits per day, 3-4 whole grains, lots of veggies). Again, his orders.

The thought about talking to him about a pill is a good idea. If I can't find something that will work better I will do that.

This dissolves completely in water, takes maybe a minute, and is pretty much tasteless.

Psyllium husk pills? You could also try these:

I've never tasted one, but I can tell you a story about them: Last winter my family drove five hours to go to my cousin's wedding and my dad and I ended up skipping lunch because we had to take a detour to pick up my boyfriend. After changing our clothes at the hotel, the three of us get a ride to the church with my mom and sister, who give me a bag of mini-pretzels to eat. I offer to share with my dad and he says,

"Oh, your mom had a ziplock bag with some cookies, so I finished them at the hotel."

To which my mom says, "Those were my Metamucil cookies!"

And that's how my boyfriend met my family.

It was the texture and not the taste that bothered me when taking stir-in fiber supplement. Just be aware a serving of stir in stuff correlates to around 6 pills (assuming half gram fiber pills). The advantage (IMO) of stir-in stuff is you need to down enough water to support it just to choke it down, while you can swallow those pills without downing enough water to fill the hydration demands they will put on you.

The clear metamucil is actually pretty decent, but don't overdo it. I would say the teaspoon or so you're supposed to use needs about 12oz of water.. much less than that and you do start to taste it a little.

And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn

hence the script. one pill, no taste, no texture

Yeah I've used the fiber pilles, and if you don't drink enough water you will feel it. I generally drink at least 20 ounces of water or more to go with the fiber.

Just practice pounding back the glass of metamucil. Being able to drink gross medical things is an acquired skill. I am, for instance, the reigning world champ of pounding two pints of barium contrast. I acquired this skill by practicing with the orange metamucil.

What is this I don't even.

Barium isn't bad until the last 2 ounces on the 2nd pint.

not a doctor, not a lawyer, examples I use may not be fully researched so don't take out of context plz, don't @ me

And that is better than the other way they get Barium in you. Yeesh.

Thank you, folks! I will take a look at the clear and natural, as well as the wafers. The pills too. All of it. All the fiber!

Seriously though, thanks for the advice!

To be honest, those pills/wafers/drinks don't have all that much fiber in them. A person needs 20-30g of fiber per day. There isn't a lot in veggies, depending on which veggies. Surprisingly, avocados are high in fiber. Mostly it is in whole grains, so if you can integrate something daily in your routine, it will help a LOT.

For example, I eat silver hills sprouted grain bread. Yes, it's expensive, but it doesn't have flour (only soaked grains), so it has 4-5g of fiber per slice. Make a sandwich with it, and you're halfway there for the day. Then you can get the rest through other veggies and grains you consume through the day. Any sprouted grain bread will be higher than your average crappy bread.

Unless you are amazing at taking pills and hated supplements, it's just a matter of time before falling off on taking such things. If you can make consistent diet habits, it can be a permanent change that you won't have to worry about again.

As some people have said, I'm pretty sure they have fiber in pill form so you can just swallow them.

Also, I've seen people eating fiber branded granola bars, maybe try those?
