This is NOT going in H&A because, well you should know why by now.
Here's my problem. Right now I go to college 1000 miles from home. In a few months, I'll be getting a job SOMEWHERE in the country, and I don't know where. Right now all my savings and whatnot is done through a local bank back home. This means when I'm in school, no banking services are available to me, and I pay ATM fees everywhere. And now with a possibility of getting a job possibly anywhere in the country, well that just won't do.
I'm looking for a nation bank, that would have a good chance of existing in most any major city in the country.
I'm already tried Bank of America, which despites it's name, seems to have No branches in Michigan.
Chase, Wachovia, Nada.
Is there even a bank with national reach, or am I just wasting my time?
i would wait to sign up until one of the big banks like compass runs a free checks/atm's for life promotion. I did that when I was 16 and it has save me oodles of money
I have an account with a credit union back home, but it's part of some sort of network which means I can take money out of any ATM with that same symbol without fees. You might want to look into something like that.
Also with a proper E*Trade account, when you use another bank or whoever's ATM and they charge you a fee, they immediately credit your account for the fee.

Fuck banks. Join a credit union.
(also smart hero they have Washington Mutual in Florida? What the hell?)
I use Citibank. I don't know how widespread they are in the rest of the country, but they are a dime a dozen here in NYC.
Funny, one of my friends got an account at eCommerce and to get to the closest branch she has to take a train two stops. And she lives in Manhattan right near a pretty damn huge tourist destination (Columbus Circle). I find that ridiculous.

I'm not sure that's the right word as they don't have branches in just about every state I've been in.
you weren't looking hard enough
Maybe you were looking too hard!

I remember a forumer relating a story about Wells Fargo to the effect that he deposited a check, then the bank proceeded to lose it, and instead of contacting the issuing bank/payroll company, they pretended the check didn't exist and pulled those funds out of the guy's account. I believe he wound up with a bunch of overdraft fees and had to spend a bunch of time unfucking everything.
I had some charges made to my account December 26 of last year, and promptly cancelled my card and got the money back.
BoA then decided it would be cool to not give me a ATM/Debit card for 2 and a half months.

I remember when my ex's purse was stolen and within 12 hours her express and GAP cards were maxed out and $40 worth of gas was spent on her debit card.
You get like 4.5 to 5.0 interest on your savings account.
4.0 interest on your checking account. (yes, they do checking now!)
Ability to purchase CDs with like 2 mouse clicks.

Disclaimer: I don't work for them.
I just make mad interest all off them and stuff.
I should look into these guys. I currently have a bunch of money saved up with GMAC Bank. They're giving me (as of Friday) 5.10% on my money market acct. I have an interest checking acct with Chase and I've been looking to change that to something that earns more than .35%. Fucking Chase.
I looked into opening Chase's "money market" and discovered it was only .70%. That's with a balance of over $10,000. What the fuck, Chase.
I had WaMu way back when, until they pulled the whole charging an overdraft fee on an overdraft fee on an overdraft fee etc. thing on me
So all through college I used a Citibank credit card excessively without paying attention to things such as interest rates and late fees and whatnot. I consistently paid late even though I knew this was bad. I swear, I musta paid like a grand in late fees over the course of those 4.5 years. When I got out of college and got a little smarter I cut up my card and paid off everything in large chunks until it was gone.
I swore to never use a card again, but when I moved in with my girlfriend the best way for us to split expenses was with a credit card that we kept track of in Quicken. Now that I'm paying attention to these things, I'm noticing just how much of a fucking racket credit cards are. The month that my grandpa died I missed my payment by a few days. Turns out if you have a late payment, they charge you a late fee that month as well as interest on two months of bills. Not just the one that you missed the grace period for, two months. I was all, buh?
Also I was pissed as hell. It didn't make sense to me even after reading the agreement several times, but my girlfriend seemed to get it. Motherfuckers.
So far I've gotten $200 in Rewards Best Buy gift certificates with this card, so I suppose the pain in the ass of that one late fee thing is worth it, but goddamn. I fucking told my girlfriend I hate credit cards, but ooooohhhh no, we had to do this.

USAA is an excellent bank, although you have to do all of your banking via mail or direct deposit or other long distance means
but they're very good
edit: also, Chase sucks a nut
BoA is out, as is wachovia.
I've already got some Credit through Chase, but they're out too.
:?:
sure
Right now I've got Washington Mutual, as well as an E*Trade savings account.
I'm earning some pretty decent interest on the E*trade account.
EDIT: As a suggestion - not questioning if SH's Washington Mutual was WaMu.
College account with no fees is pretty swank

I applied for a credit card from them, they sent me a rejection letter, and then sent me a credit card.
That probably shows incompetence, but it worked in my favor, so I can't complain.
Now I have good credit, and everyone wants to give me one.
