Hand-rolling cigarettes

I'm having trouble rolling together a cigarette of decent consistency. I can barely get the shape rolled. I've looked at online pictorials and everything, and I just can't seem to get the hang of it.

can anyone help me get my tobacco rolled properly?

For some reason, I could never do it properly for about a year. I just kept doing it and smoking my crappy deformed ones, and eventually something clicked and now I roll perfect smokes. The key is mostly keeping everything pretty tight together so it can't shift around after you seal the paper.

This is something that is (imo) impossible to describe any better then the pictorals you've already seen. You just need someone to show you a few times in person.

In any case, why don't you just buy a little cigarette roller? Should be able to find one at a cigar shop, or head shop.

    1) when starting out use way too much tobacco, over a plate or something so you don't loose any.

    2) find out how to use a dollar to roll them at first using the dollar

    3) When you are ready to do it by yourself roll it back at forth between your fingers first so you get a nice tube shaped consistency of tobacco. Place it on a flat surface still pinched between your fingers (kind of like a U shape with the tobacco in the U and you are pinching it with your thumb and index finger). Now, with your middle fingers grab up above where the two sides meet (if the side thats directly on the table is even or lower than the side on top, change it so the side on the table is the longer side) so you are only holding the side of paper that is directly on the table and with your index fingers pull the shorter side that should be on top towards you rolling the paper towards you and making that perfect cigarette shape. When its close enough (doesn't have to be perfect, as long as you can roll it over the top part once so you get the sticky part on the rolled piece) while keeping it on the flat surface, just simply roll it forward (pretty tightly). Then lick and stick. Viola. I know this was horribly explained but I've never had to just explain it phonetically, and its kind of an advanced technique but its worked for me for a long while.

A couple of other hints (when starting out, when you get the hang of it don't do these anymore, they make your cig less beautiful):

Crumple up the paper before starting

    Use two papers

Seriously go to a tobacco shop and get a cigg roller. It will cost you a single dollar, quite the investment I know. Also get some packs of 1.5s. Just practice with the roller until you get it right. I've gotten to the point where I can rip a 1.5 in half and use it instead of the whole thing. Its so nice using as little paper as possible. You might also check out getting some filters as well.

filters really help whether hand or machine rolling.

They help you maintain the shape and most people who start rolling, especially after smoking prepackaged, tend to like having that little bit to hold onto.

My Kiwi Step-Dad taught me how to roll a cig, apparently everybody in the world rolls their except for the States. Tailor mades are very expensive outside the states.

Anyways, the secret I learned was not putting in a lot of tobacco on the paper and roll inside to the out.

Just bought a hand roller. Just as frustrating as doing it by hand if not more. I followed the direction but it just ends up scattering the tobacco everywhere after I tried actually rolling it into the paper

Open the roller up and firmly press the 'belt' if that's what you wanna call it down in between the rollers creating your valley to fill up with tobacco. Jam as much as you wish in there (you can overfill it causing your cigg to get incredibly fucking tight and burn badly)and shut the roller.

Hold the roller with the opening/closing mechanism towards you and have your thumbs resting on the top of the rollers. Here is where it might get tricky. MOST people roll with their thumbs pushing downward. I, for whatever reason, cannot. I have to roll with my thumbs pushing upward. Do whatever feels correct for you. Now on the off-chance that you roll my way you must adjust for this quirky method of rolling. Instead of putting the paper in with the gum facing you, you must put the paper in gum facing out. Should you not your cigg will fall apart upon ejecting it from the machine.

Once you get it down its quite easy. Wait until you can roll with half of a 1.25 or something its so great. The less paper the better.

Cigarette smoking (either rolled your own or bought) can cause some pretty nasty side effects:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cigarette#Contents_and_health_effects

Just saying, it could be harmful to your health if not done right.

Having said that ,you can buy machines (on the internet) that will help you roll them better.
Or, most stores in the U.S. have pre-rolled cigarettes for sale (check your local gas station and ask if they have any of them in).

There is no "right way" to avoid th damage smoking will do to your lungs. Filters could lessen it to an extent but it will be harmful if you smoke often. That being said, rolling yourself a cigarette now and then sounds pretty nice.

I don't smoke personally, but I can understand the appeal of a cigarette every once in a while and I could see myself possibly buying some tobacco and rolling paper. If I were to get some, what would be good? I would be looking for somthing pretty mild, nothing really hardcore. What are good papers to use? Also, are filters a yay or nay?

For fuck's sake, I'm sure he knows cigarettes are bad for him. If he's using a computer, I'm sure he hasn't been living in a cave, in a volcano, under the ocean for the past 15 years.

Well, unless there's something out there I don't know about, you're not gonna be "rolling" your own cigarettes if you're gonna smoke filters. There are machines that aren't too expensive you can buy where you basically stick an empty filter tube on an end of it, dump in a bunch of tobacco, and it stuffs the cigarette full of tobacco. My roommate had one and was smoking pipe tobacco with it for a while, it was kinda rough but really fucking tasty. The machines are kind of prone to breaking, unless you spend a fair chunk of cash and get a good one.

I don't really know much about papers. Zig Zags are crap, they're a pain in the ass to roll and are just all around shitty. There's a brand that I believe starts with an M that's very good, and you've also got the crazy rice papers and transparent stuff. You want ones that aren't too tough to roll, but aren't imparting too much of a taste, since the goal is to be smoking tobacco, not paper.

If you're gonna start rolling, Bali Shag (The blue bag specifically, don't remember what it's called) is a good place to start. The tobacco isn't great, but it's mellow and easy as hell to roll because it's usually so damp. And it comes with papers, so you can start worrying about that when you run out after tearing too many.
