On one hand you have the people who are too cool for jrpgs and on the other hand you have people who like all that pseudo SciFi bullcrap in the later ff games
here I am, stuck in the middle with my reasonable opinions
Because people like you act like this started in later FF games, when actually it started in VI
the tech/magic mashup stuff was already present in the really old-school western RPGs that inspired the first JRPGs, like the Wizardry and Ultima series
the NES/MSX port of Ultima III was the most direct and obvious inspiration for both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, and the final boss of that was an evil mainframe computer
not because of any particular faults with the game itself because i really don't even remember it well enough to talk about that sort of thing
but because there was a month or two before release where ads for it were all over the place on tv, and it was all these incredible cgi videos of epic wars and crazy spells and storming castles and shit
and i had never really heard of an mmorpg before and the idea sounded ncredible on paper
plus the ps2 version was one hundred and ten dollars and came with a hard drive that you had to install the game onto, surely it had to be the most amazing, awe-inspiring game ever for them to be charging double the price of a normal game plus a subscription fee
it took about a month for it to fully sink in that i had been hoodwinked
i played the famicom version of ff3 before. it was neat once i understood what was going.
I still don't know what the story is about, but i like games with class systems, so that was fun, and i had a faq with translations for spells and stuff so i managed to brute force my way through it for a while. then stopped playing it.
3 did some neat things
it invented the job system and had like five different airships and there were temporary characters and it was very different from 1 and 2
of course the ending is like two dungeons and eight bosses in a row with no save points (also the double final boss is really hard?)
I thought the DS version of 3 (the only one I've ever played) was just bad. Hated the job system, didn't enjoy the combat, and the graphics were a big turnoff. I still almost beat it but have no desire to ever actually finish the game up.
The GBA version of FF1, on the other hand, I found to be a ton of fun. They polished up the combat a lot and while it lacks the challenge of the original game (or any challenge, at all) I think that only helped it.
I just... I know we shouldn't go on about it since there's already a Dark Souls thread but
I don't understand how a game grabbed me so hard. I've been in a huge video game slump for years, not really sure what I enjoy and what I just use to waste time
but Dark Souls was just so perfect in so many ways, that even when it infuriated me, I could still acknowledge I was having a lot of fun
It was the kind of experience when you get a video game as a kid, and you would have loved it otherwise, but the rarity of such an occasion made you love it ten times more.
I hope that wasn't my last earth-shattering gaming experience of my life. I want lots more like that.

Something bad.
Do it next year to try to raise money for child's play.
also you probably would not even make it to any of the good ones because the early ones are basically storyless grindfests
it's an rpg

RACE RACE RACE RACE
and if you did III's ending dungeon(s) would put you down for sure

It was annarchy online and I thought it was the TITS.
Dich's right.
I played through the DS version of 3.
Was a pretty decent game 'til I got to the end.
Said "Fuck this shit" and never picked it up again.

In fact, it definitely 100% is.
100% agree. Also judging by Ryan's twitter account, he's going to a Headboard reunion show right now.

goty 2012
I'm glad some people can find joy in it
like basically 90% of what it has to offer is the hilarious image of a pomeranian slaughtering an alligator and achieving Boss Rank
