Most teenagers get to grow up without encountering
anything scarier than gang violence, drug overdoses and
chlamydia. They think thas the worst that the world has
to offer them, and they have the luxury of laughing.

You don't have the luxury of laughing. You know the world
has hideous, horrible things hiding in the shadows. You know
because you’re one of them. There's wickedness that
dwells within your chest, darkness that courses
through your veins.

Most teenagers will never know that things like you exist,
the secret monsterhearts.

--

Monsterhearts is a story game about what it means to grow up, to change, to become something more. It's a game about emotional outbursts, petty rivalries, and stupid, stupid teenage drama. It's also a game about dark hungers, about controlling your darkest self and dealing with the fact that you're always going to hurt somebody.

It's a game set in the milieu of popular teen supernatural horror romance stories like True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, Buffy, Angel, and yes, barf, Twilight (there won't be any sparkling vampires). Characters are mean, selfish and beautiful, hellbent on destroying their lives and maybe even taking the world with them.

Sounds fun, doesn't it?

WHAT YOU NEED AND WHAT I WANT

I'd love to take three to four players on a spin through a season of Monsterhearts. If you'd like to get in on this action you can find the game in PDF for 10$ over HERE. If you want to play just say so and we'll get to it when I have some people who are interested. Don't worry about coming up with character ideas or anything just yet, we'll settle all that later.

All you need to do is sign up in bloody crimson. If you have any questions, by all means ask! I know I painted the game as doom and melodramatic gloom, and it is, but we're going to have fun with it too.

Thanks to @jdarksun for compiling all of our character stuff into one post found HERE.

I like games where you self-destruct in a fabulous way. Not quite enough to throw my hat in the ring, but I'll definitely be watching and almost certainly taking notes.

I maintain fully that once you see the glorious mess that is the game you will be unable to contain your desire to play

also I like our applicants so far so I'll take you guys.

    @Rainfall
    @jdarksun
    @destroyah87

    here we go.

    WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

you, my friends, need to look through the list of skins and pick one. since we have four players we have plenty of skins to go around so once one is taken it's taken.

making the character you want is easy after that so go ahead and make a person, stopping at Backstory/Strings.

    We'll do that last. together.

Also, might as well start off with some questions.

Where's our season going to be set, anyway?

  • jdarksunjdarksun Struggler CORegistered User regular
    Gonna tag werewolf!

  • RainfallRainfall Registered User regular
Ugh I love all the skins. Infernal is tempting, as are Fae, Witch, and Chosen.
Arc, what's your opinion on The Angel and The Serpentine?

I'm fond of the idyllic mountain college-type town, with lots of wilderness, misty mornings, dark nights, and predators and prey both human and animal walking in the night.
Alternatively, a big city, an urban jungle, with crowds of people where you can feel completely alone.

  • Super NamicchiSuper Namicchi Orange County, CARegistered User regular
I like them both but if I'm being completely honest I like the Angel way more than the Serpentine. that said if you'd like to choose that option you are encouraged to do so.

I like the idea of the forested/mountainy college town, too.

  • RainfallRainfall Registered User regular
I'm going to take The Infernal.

    Here we go!

    Name: Mika Dansen
    Look: Tense, with burning eyes.
    Origin: Bartered Soul

    Hot 0 Cold -1 Volatile 1 Dark 1

    Soul Debt to The Fallen
    Can't Save Myself

Bargains to get The Power Flows Through You. Elsewise Power, Strings Attached, Numbing It Out, and Uncanny Voices
    Experience marked X X X X

Conditions: Wow What a Bitch applied by Will.

    Strings: 1x Michael 1x Selvie 1x Roy

Also, rules question because it's not clearly explained.
For Advancement, if you roll with a 'highlighted stat' you mark experience, up to once per scene. Can we pick any two stats to highlight, or are those the stats that our Skin gets at 1?

  • Super NamicchiSuper Namicchi Orange County, CARegistered User regular
Highlighting works that at the beginning of a session (however arbitrary we will be defining that for our PbP) that the person with the most strings on you highlights one of your stats and then the MC highlights another.

  • Super NamicchiSuper Namicchi Orange County, CARegistered User regular
also, The Fallen, eh? I already have some excellent ideas regarding that, I was hoping you'd take The Fallen.

Okay, I am still flicking through how this works, and it is late so I will probably do a character properly tomorrow

but I have to say the Angel seems really quite interesting so far

also forested/mounty college town is cool, like a cross between Anita Blake and Gilmore Girls, haha

If you want a good idea for how the game ends up flowing, the two Dungeon World games running are using the same Apocalypse Engine. it's all about back and forth and co-narration. they're becoming my favorite games!

  • TalonrazorTalonrazor Registered User regular
Ok, so I hate all the source material but it sounds kinda awesome. I am very tempted to play out some drama, after having to watch all those Vampire Diaries with the wife.

If you have room, I would love to Sign up in Bloody Crimson.

Yessss be the Angel it will work so well!

Sure, we can take one more.

    i love the vampire diaries...

but yeah it's going to be melodramatic as hell. and yeah I'd love the interplay between an Infernal and an Angel!

also it looks like people are on board for a forested/mountainy place. how does Blackwood, MO, home of the Blackwood Bears sound?

  • TalonrazorTalonrazor Registered User regular
I an dig forest / mountain place, as long as it is pretty urban still.

I am settling on an Icelandic character. Kinda go with a Viking-inspired vibe, lots of tattoos, bad-boy attitude, drives a Harley, rich parents, etc. Maybe a Bane/Dwalin inspired character after watching The Dark Knight Rises and The Hobbit? I am thinking maybe The Chosen or The Werewolf.

    Thoughts?

Ok, read the excerpts, got intrigued, bought the PDF, I am totally hooked now. This sounds awesome in a fucked up way and I love that.

I have a rough concept but I want to float it past you first to make sure it will gel with what you got in mind. I want to play a guy slightly older, about twenty-two. Sophomore in the college, he plays on the college football team as a defensive tackle and teaches part-time at the local high school (PE, or something). A werewolf, he is a cunning predatory type that helps out with his uncle's bail bonding agency. Kind of real obsessed hunter type but more refined than a stereotypical werewolf. Bit of anger problem. Think Bane or Branson from their movies. I am thinking his family is pretty rich and respected; his father a professor at the college and his mother a brilliant architect. His look is lots of tattoos, an impossibly long braided beard, real Viking look, and a Young Dwalin inspired mohawk. I kinda want to go less primal and more unrelenting cunning and determination until he gets pissed.

Werewolf, with Heightened Senses and either Primal Dominance or Uncontainable. Kinda wanna go with a Moon angle. Maybe he is convinced the Moon Goddess gave him these powers or something?

I really love the passion, though if he's graduated high school it might be difficult to work him into a compelling drama as most of the motion in the game is pretty centered around the toxic relationships of highschool kids who also happen to be awful monsters.

Also I'm trying to involve as many skins as possible and jdarksun tagged the werewolf! Is there another skin you might be interested in?

  • TalonrazorTalonrazor Registered User regular
Didn't even notice that. I was also looking at The Chosen and I think that will fit my concept just as well.

For the high school, I was thinking he would work there while going to college. Might be kinda interesting to see what people think about his relationship with all these kids a couple of years younger than him.

Thinking of the Ghoul or Ghost

    Possibly Vampire.

The Queen skin could be fun too.

Probably the Ghoul though, I'll think about this some later but right now I have to leave for work.

    @Talonrazor
I'm not sure how well a 22 year old will fit into the game, especially if you're in a position of authority over the other characters. There's some interesting themes there, but playing an inherently more mature character that's going to be excluded from a lot of social interactions(and will come across as super creepy in certain other contexts) might not work too well in this game.

  • RainfallRainfall Registered User regular
That being said I really like the visual you came up with for the character!

I mean, I pictured this guy as doing one of two jobs in a school: Janitor or Gym assistant. Not sure which would be more creepy.

As for me, leaning heavily to Ghoul. But I might still be struck by a better idea.

If it doesn't work, I can go with teenager. I was thinking how to create the most drama possible and thought maybe a guy hunting monsters who hangs out with kids who are monsters who go to the school he works at might be really dramatic. Might be cool to have siblings as NPCs that are students too. But I can see the unbalancing aspect between characters and if it is too much no problem.

I shall follow this with interest, since you seem to have more than enough signed up. Never played it, but I like the idea!

I really like the feel of your character, I would love if he were a teen like the rest. you could make him a senior or even a super senior (maybe he got left back for being a troublemaker?). it'd be really interesting to see a monsterhearts character who is very obviously close to leaving the cesspit of teenage drama and crap but just can't seem to pull himself free... especially if he's a chosen. I'd definitely want to see some "growing up" moves taken in the future for the character if that's what you end up going with.

  • TalonrazorTalonrazor Registered User regular
Ok. I can definitely jive with that. Is it cool if I make him defensive captain on football team and work part time with uncle bail enforcement? And what year is this set in? I also have a huge family sketched out if you want it. Might be cool for NPcs. Also, I haven't been this excited for a new rpg in awhile.

    sig4.jpg
  • TalonrazorTalonrazor Registered User regular
Also I love this idea of super senior. Cause some tension with his family.

I should have been more clear, we're pretty much all set on players. Five is definitely my upper limit :)
