Leather Boots/Shoes: What's Your Care Routine?

snorepezsnorepez Registered User regular
I just bought a pair of very nice brown leather halfboots (for walking and going out, and not workboots). I haven't worn them outside yet, because I'd like to determine the best way to care for them and protect them from the elements.

So, if you have a pair of leather shoes, how do you care for yours? Thanks

For my boots (I guess they are cowboy-style dress boots) I use Bickmore conditioner/cleaner. Leather dress shoes get polished after they are cleaned. Maybe I should do it more often, but I cannot be arsed to polish a pair of shoes more than once every few weeks or monthly (unless I get them all cruddy or scuffed) I try to wear them in rotation where I'm not wearing a pair 2 days in a row.

I put shoe trees in my shoes when I'm not wearing them.

This is for smooth leather; not sure how to clean suede shoes as I would think these cleaners and polishes would ruin the finish.

I generally polish my shoes at least once a week with polish+wipe+brush, which keeps 'em nice and shiny.

Really, you don't need to do much more than that (or could do much more). Shoes will fall apart. Try to make them last as long as you can.

Toss on an anti-water agent and clean them before they get gross. Simple, really.
