From Kathryn Bigelow, director of Point Break and the woefully-named K-19: The Widowmaker, which Harrison Ford goes into detail about here...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0Wdj_K2znA

...And also, you know, The Hurt Locker, which was a pretty fantastic film that you should maybe see if you haven't yet (it won a bunch of those fancy Oscars)...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GxSDZc8etg

...Comes Zero Dark Thirty, that "Osama bin Laden movie" you've probably heard about by now, which has had some pretty great damn trailers, especially the final one which features a choral rendition of a Metallica song that actually makes it sound good

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAtWcvCxPhc

So anyways, this movie technically is already out in New York and L.A. just to get it out in time for Oscar season, while it was delayed everywhere else (grumble grumble) to January 11, which is totally next Friday and holy shit I can't wait to see this movie

It's currently holding a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, 91% among top critics, and is a definite lock for a Best Picture nom next year and seems a strong contender to win it. It also features a pretty great cast!

Starring:
Jessica Chastain (I have only seen her in The Help but she was the best part of that film)
Jason Clark (Um. Hmm. Don't know who this guy is.)
Joel Edgerton (This one either, though a cursory glance at his Wikipedia page said he played young Uncle Owen in Star Wars Eps II and III? I can't be expected to know everyone!)
Mark Strong (He was great in Kick-Ass and Sherlock Holmes, guessing this dude plays a good villain, I'm interested to see him in this)
Chris Pratt (Bert Macklin, not sure what the FBI is doing here)
Kyle Chandler (Coach Taylor! He is generally awesome)
Harold Perrineau (WAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLTTTTT)
James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano, he's been in other things but come on)

So anyways since this movie is going to be new to the majority of us next Friday, I'm gonna need a place to gush over this (if all goes well) and I imagine you all will too. Who else is excited for this?

people have been skeptical of Chris Pratt being in a serious movie like this but he is one of the only actors I can think of in his age group that actually seems like a believable modern military soldier to me. at least going off all of the dudes i know who have served and are around my/his age

The criticism is unfair, and its reading of both the film and the actual story seems willfully mistaken. Torture may be morally wrong, and it may not be the best way to obtain information from detainees, but it played a role in America's messy, decade-long pursuit of Osama bin Laden, and Zero Dark Thirty is right to portray that fact.

Also apparently the torture scene depicted in the film doesn't actually work on the detainee

Woulda been pretty fucking awkward to have this movie with no torture scenes, since that's like a thing the US did for a long time trying to extract info regarding Bin Laden

I was under the impression that torture was not used to get that info. Which is why it is so bad the film suggests it was instrumental in finding him

The Passion of the Christ supports torture and the death penalty because it portrays those methods as leading to the salvation of mankind.

what's the deal with not wanting to include torture in a reconstruction of an event in which torture actually occurred

I am interested in this movie because the killing of Osama really fucked with its development and they had to change the entire ending.

Like, this movie is very timely in the sense that it was being made almost a decade in to the hunt for Osama. So it isn't right after the fact or quickly jumping on sensationalism, it was meant to be about this endless manhunt and what it means for a country to not have closure after trauma. But then after he was killed, it's like...whelp, guess that all changes now.

So if you don't know that, it seems like it's a really tasteless money grab over an assassination, when it wasn't meant to be that at all.

I heard that in exchange for access to CIA documents President Obama demanded the filmmakers depict him personally storming the compound alone and executing Bin Laden after a protracted fistfight while SEAL Team Six just circles overhead and cheers him on

"You just got your Madrassa kicked" he says right before pulling all the pins off Osama's grenade belt and shoving him off the roof
