Warframe : Space Ninjas

A few of us have been playing Warframe in Ventrilo, it's pretty good so far. It's kind of like Mass Effect's multiplayer in that you take on small missions with a group, and earn upgrades for your dude. Each of your weapons, and your Warframe level up independently. It's free to play, so you can pay money to get stuff done faster. It's a fun 4 player cooperative game, a nice counterpoint to the PvP of Mechwarrior Online so many of us have been sinking time into.

Here's the official site: https://warframe.com/
You can get a beta key here: http://www.mmobomb.com/giveaway/warframe-beta-keys
Or you can pay to get into the founders program. I don't know if the game has legs enough yet to jump in at founders, so grab the free beta key.

If someone else types up a good first post, we'll close this thread and they can open an official one. I just figured a thread to collect our info would be great here.

I was thinking about creating a thread for this but hadn't really started making one yet. The game is a ton of fun, and it scratches that same sort of itch that ME3 multi had. What weapons have people tried out so far? I got the aklato pistols and they have been great, the latron(?) has been kind of underwhelming even after ranking it up some.

    d/ling beta now.

Been excited for this game since I first saw the trailer.

I could swear I saw a kickass trailer for this years ago but I have a feeling I'm thinking of some entirely different game, or a very very early version of this. As for the game itself, I haven't really bothered with it but since it's free I might try it out someday. Looks vaguely fun.

I just downloaded the beta for this, hopefully I'll be able to find some people on Vent tonight to play some?

Looks like a more mobile ME3 multiplayer.

I'm down for trying that. Will download, anyone got any tips or are we at the 'fuck around to find what works' stage this early on?

Yes its extremely co-op based, which isn't a bad thing.

I got a beta invite a couple weeks ago and have gone through the first system of missions before it branches. But the game is interesting, but would be better playing with other people with voice chat and such. To that end I setup ventrilo again and I shall have to hop on sometime and hopefully catch some of you playing it.

Wow I dug what I played of the first mission (cough 38% damage done cough).

So I figure, you know what, I'll drop a fiver on it. Hey they even have a sweet offer on all the female warframes who also happen to contain roles I want to play.

Wait how much is platinum now?

Right game, so you want me to spend nineteen pounds to get 3 shiney suits. This is your idea of a BUNDLE DEAL.

    Christ.

Gameplays fine, but really with those prices?

Yes and I have all her skins.

Together both of those skins cost LESS than that bundle.

If you dropped that much just starting up league you can get the champions choice bundle with 20 champions in it.

Downloaded the beta and tried it for a bit. Certainly has promise at least for some good times.

So here is a price breakdown currently for platinum to warframe/gun costs. At the base cost platinum costs 15 per $1, then when taking the bonus values added with the $10 and $30 platinum deals in it comes into about 17 platinum per $1. Using those values I figured out the base cost of the warframes and a sampling of the guns.

Warframe(s) Platinum Cost, Base Cost, w/ bonus Platinum
    Volt, Excalibur and Loki 75P, $5, $4.40
    Mag 175P, $12, $10.30
    Ember and Trinity 225P, $15, $13.25
    Ash 375P, $25, $22

That is pretty crazy to me, even with how much I am enjoying the game I couldn't bring myself to drop $12-15 on a single character. The weapons unsurprisingly are similarly priced starting with the upgrade to the basic assault rifle running $5, some of the sidearms running ~$8 and then shotgun starting at ~$12 topping it off with the long range weapons being ~$15. There are a few things to keep in mind here, one being that there are weapons available that can only be crafted, though how many or how good they are I do not know. Second is that the warframes can be crafted too, it just takes a lot of time and access to the higher level systems.

Yeah I'm quite willing to drop money on this game to get the warframes I want (don't care what gun I have honestly) but at those prices it just becomes 2/3rds of the cost of a retail game to get the bundle for the female pack.

    EDIT:

Haven't watched it yet but might be helpful for people who're waiting for the download.

I gave this a try last night, and it seemed enjoyable. Is there no way to earn extra characters without spending cash though? And are the 4th abilities of characters locked in the same way? I seemingly couldn't find a way to get either through other means.

Edit: Oh, they can be crafted. I wonder what the time investment is for that. A large part of what makes the ME3 multiplayer fun for me is being to play all sorts of different characters on a whim...if I have to spend huge amounts of time or cash just to get a character beyond the first, this will definitely not be the game for me.

Ok found out about crafting from both what I have acquired and the forums. Currently to craft a warframe you need a warframe blueprint which you buy with credits from the shop. Then you need 3 crafted components to complete it, and that requires getting the blueprints for the components and getting the crafting items. The component blueprints are boss drops from certain bosses, generally each boss can drop the components blueprints for 1-2 warframes. From what I have found so far each component blueprint requires a certain amount of common items and 1 rarer item that can only be found in certain planets levels. After the components and their blueprints are found and crafted you can then craft the warframe itself.

Its hard to say how long this would actually take, I am going to be trying to build ember since I have one component blueprint and the warframe blueprint. It definitely is time consuming, but it seems something that you do while working toward leveling up different weapons or saving for new ones.

Oh that's sad to hear. I wish they at least gave us easy access to the 3 base Frames. You get to pick 1 in the tutorial then are stuck with that one for who knows how many dozens of hours before getting to play anything else, unless you pay real cash.

Maybe start us with 1 at tutorial, then get to unlock a 2nd base Frame after you reach a certain level, then the last one at a higher level still. The rest is still bought through cash/ crafting

Are these guys the Dark Sector devs?

Nice catch, btw, having watched the video I kind of agree with the assessment that early on there's nothing that really makes me go 'well that's awesome' everythings just well polished and adequate.

Also, Trinity looks cool, I like playing healer.

Interesting, well, that's better than it could be, perhaps. I'll play s'more and see how it seems. Shame that the 4th ability seems to require cash and has no crafting path to it; that seems like double-dipping to me.

Yeah, that is probably the thing I dislike the most about the f2p part of the game. It feels like the character is incomplete without the pro upgrade and having absolutely no way to get it without paying seems wrong.

    Yeah, got 50 plat too.

So, the pricing. I did five missions with my Loki I picked after the tutorial, decided it was so fun I could consider throwing some money at them, saw that bundle of warframes that looked interesting, checked how much framedollars cost.

Jesus H, 30 dollars to get enough platinum to buy that bundle of three warframes. I can get a decently new AAA game for that.

So congratulations to the devs. Instead of a decent price level that makes me stick around, do some purchases, have fun with my new warframes, I'll just play this until I get tired of the Loki frame I started with and then move on to something else.

Remember that's a bundle, that's actually more the cost of 2 warframes.

It makes me sad. I want to play more, but at the same time I don't because there's an obvious paywall in terms of unlocking a warframes full tree and I don't want to pay the price their asking.

  • chocoboliciouschocobolicious Registered User regular
Looking at the prices, this doesn't look like a particular irregular cost as far as F2P games go. Hell, I had to spend more then that on ME3 to get a few of the more obscure classes without playing for several hundred hours and hoping.

Hell, I've spent more on virtual swim suits in Vindictus then they are asking for the frames,so there is that.

I do wish you started off with your powers, though. Its a bit dull at first to have none of the cool shit that makes your warframe unique.

    steam_sig.png
  • EchoEcho ski-bap ba-dapModerator, Administrator admin
Yeah, first pay for a warframe and then grind xp to actually get the abilities for it. Meh.

  • TheGerbilTheGerbil Registered User regular
    Luckily you level fairly quickly.

But yeah the costs are very steep. Apparently they are looking into adjusting them? That is what I've heard, will try to dig into it myself.

  • EchoEcho ski-bap ba-dapModerator, Administrator admin
I'm fine with leveling up to unlock the customization slots, but you just bought that warframe for its abilities. And then you don't even get to use them at once.

I could be very happy with them being cheaper. The game seems fairly fun so far, though the people I've played with just dash to the exit ignoring pretty much everything so its kind of sad. Guess I should solo. But then I die and you apparently have to pay for revives? That seems a bit sad.
