Searching for work in a different city

Hi all,

I have about 3 months left at my current job as my department is getting outsourced. I'm starting to look for work in earnest right now and am looking at some other cities besides Seattle where I'm currently living now. The cities on my list of places I'd like to live/work are San Francisco (Bay Area), Portland and Chicago. NY and Boston are kind of backup destinations. And worst case scenario; I'm almost certain I could find employment back in Detroit, but I'd prefer not to move back there as the quality of life leaves something to be desired.

My question is what should I be doing in regards to applying for work, getting my resume out and trying to network in cities that are a fair distance out. Portland isn't too bad because I'm down there about every 6 weeks or so to visit friends. San Fran/Chicago/NY/Boston are a little more difficult.

Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal would be nice, but I know virtually nothing about looking for work in Canada. (I'm a US citizen). Heck, for that matter, if I could find work in Europe I'd take that as well, but that's a far off bet.

Chicago and suburbs have a lot of industries and many are hiring sporadically, but there's a lot of unemployment here as well.

Just observational, I'd say it mirrors the national average and trends here - professionals giving up or taking retail/lower skilled work. Living costs are not outrageous, probably lower than most of the other cities, with slightly lower pay to match.

HotJobs, Indeed, and Dice are all aggregate sites, but really need an inside into a company to have much of a chance. Look into relatives and friends who's companies have a branch office in the city you're interested in.

I used to work for a large ad agency in Detroit so I know several folks in that field in Chicago in particular. I'll have to start reaching out to folks.
