Help me get Fallout running

So I missed out on a lot of old PC gaming and I want to change that. I got myself a copy of Fallout and I'm having some trouble getting it to run on XP. Whenever I start the game, after making my character and the opening cinematic, the screen goes black. I can fix it by moving my cursor all over the screen or alt tabbing, but it just happens a few seconds later. Tried switching the compatibility to Windows 95 and 98, as well as running it in 640 x 480 and 256 colors. No dice. I got this program called Dosbox but I have no idea whats going on. Help me Penny Arcade!

That one always worked for me.
Dunno if you've tried it.
Edit: Also, get the patches if you haven't already. Lotsa bug fixes.
