Man, originally I wasn't planning on hitting the gym tonight (I usually go on Tuesdays) because I have calligraphy class tonight, but, holy god, after what they fed me for lunch I probably should rush to the gym straight after school and skip dinner. O.O
How high is american income tax these days? I thought it was really low.
the very highest right now i think is ~40%
it varied based on filing status but it's roughly that for income over 400k
Um.
Abd, chu is correct, but leaving a bit out.
The top marginal rate is 39.6, which you have to pay for all wage income received over 400k. However, all the money you make below that threshhold is taxed at the rate of it's respective bracket.
Plug "$401000" into that and check the result. It's even lower for Married Filing Jointly.
EDIT: Oh wait, I totally missed the "this year" part. My bad. /blush
When does that go into effect?

The payroll tax holiday expiration changed my paycheck by $2. Maybe my company did something to compensate. Our CEO is a huge republican but tends to express this by shielding employees from government changes and sending an email about it rather than raging publicly and telling us all how to vote.
Oh, and once he got drunk and told us that he's not starting a recycling program in the office because his employees are not trash sorting vagrants. The CFO took the microphone away so quickly, I was dying laughing.
Thousands of hot, local singles are waiting to play at bubbulon.com.
Under President McCain your rates would've been this for the last two yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaars
Get angry, sure, but do it at the right people, Spool.
You are confused. I'm not talking about the payroll tax.
I'm talking about an obscure mortgage credit that I qualified for. It got rewritten and the change carved a couple thousand bucks directly out of my actual return. Not an increase in my taxable income.
Because I'm sure that "simplifying the tax code and closing loopholes" would have preserved an obscure mortgage deduction that you benefited from
And if "lowering rates" would have benefited you to the tune of more than that couple thousand bucks, you'd have to be in a high enough tax bracket for it to not make a big difference
Meanwhile you'd be losing a bunch more deductions that anyone in the top 2% wouldn't care abut, while their rates drop dramatically and you, at best, break even
it saddens me greatly how i am seriously incapable of telling anymore who on the internet is saying dumb things to troll and who is saying dumb things because they believe dumb things
the 2012 twitter posts thing is a perfect example
are some of them trolls? of course
can i tell them apart?
no
and that makes me sad

Um.
They've gone up for incomes over 400k this year, to something like 39.4%
This not being super easy info to find might be part of your problem over there
One of them, for sure.
Also, I'm assuming you know things you may not and then people are assuming I don't know things I do because there's no easy way to talk about taxes because we've made them so confounding, partially on purpose.

out of curiosity what is the code or ID for the credit in question? I am curious about its history.
II don't know exactly since I have Turbotax do this for me, but you need a Mortgage Credit Certificate issued to you.
My understanding is that they don't issue these anymore.

The new rates go into effect for when you file next year... but it's also, of course, not going to be 39.whatever% total on a 400k income because you only pay that rate on the income you earn over 400k.
Allegedly a voice of reason.

He's probably better off in there anyway, since his throat is now painful to the point where he cannot swallow
But I do not think it is any easier on my mum, emotionally
(though nothing really will be until this is over)
I didn't figure you were, but that's kind of what Pony was saying, that he got accused of being "rapist material" by a feminist because he's an asshole. I'm an asshole, this has never made me consider raping anyone, man or woman.
I got what Pony was saying. I didn't want to jump to the conclusion that he was mistaking his one experience for some kind of general trend of "feminists" (however you choose the define that) jumping down poor, unsuspecting guys' throats for daring to question The Hive She-Mind.
So I just suggested he reconsider his general approach to the social universe.
actually that's not at all what i'm saying, so maybe you should roll your jump to conclusions mat up and put it away for now
I didn't want to jump to the conclusion that...

Dude... we have assholes here that say they'd TURN DOWN A PROMOTION if it would put them into the next bracket. I think having about half of our citizenry not knowing how marginal taxation works is by fucking design.

If you are truly a feminist then you shouldn't consider hitting a female to be worse than hitting a male.
However, if you aren't an asshole you should, obviously, consider hitting a person of either sex to be wrong barring legitimate self defense!
and given the low rates at which, culturally, a man is in a position of having to defend himself from a woman by way of striking
hey maybe don't hit women
isn't that unreasonable a general rule, for now
Well, my personal experience with this is going to be different. I almost got arrested for domestic violence once, because I was defending myself from a kick in the balls and my girlfriend at the time called the cops to try and be dramatic (I grabbed her foot and she fell over because she was off balance). There is certainly a double standard in the way violent crime is treated, I've experienced it.
No I do not think this means you should hit women, and no I don't think it's evidence of misandry...it just happens, in some places.

How much tax you pay is, well, how much tax you pay
The problem is that our tax code is fucked, and we literally can't tell you who pays what until we actually file our taxes. Even people making the same amount of money can have wildly different final tax rates.

Hey, instead of boosting me from $40,000 to $45,000, how about you just let me use the company car because I don't want to get bumped into the new tax bracket.

This is federal income tax only. It does not include bullshit "payroll taxes" or state and local taxes.
