School and/or Work Bag Recommendations

So I'm getting tired of carrying all my stuff around campus in my gym bag. Last semester I tried something very similar to this laptop bag. It was a little cramped, and I guess I overloaded it a couple of times and it tore up where the strap meets the bag. It also looks a little too formal when I'm walking around campus in a hoodie and jeans; this isn't a make-or-break issue, but something that kinda works in formal and informal settings would be nice. I'll also hopefully be in grad school come this fall, so it'd be nice if I can find something that'd look good on a Srs Bsns grad student in addition to a lowly undergrad. In short, I need something that:
  • Is reasonably priced. My budget is roughly $50-75, and I'd like not to have to buy another bag for a good long while.
  • Has a convenient form factor. I was considering going with a backpack, though one that looks capital-C Classy. Some of my friends have these new-fangled Swiss Army backpacks that looks pretty spiffy.
  • Is hells of durable. I'm willing to pay a little extra for something rugged.
  • Is versatile/will let me use it as a Bat Utility Belt. I carry around a lot of things that I don't normally need, but that come in handy in a pinch -- dry-erase markers, VGA cable, extra pens and pencils, stapler, etc. I'd like to be able to keep all these contingency items with me.
  • Will protect my grossly overpriced laptop. Quality padding is a must.

Can't think of anymore stipulations right now, but anything aside from the above would be more of a minor Want versus Need anyhow.

    This thread discusses bags:

I don't think just about any bag posted in that thread is worth the price. That said, $75 is pretty cheap for a durable, classy bag. At that price range, I'd recommend just getting a decent Jansport backpack. They're durable and guaranteed.

What is this I don't even.

Ah, sorry. Didn't see that thread.

Well, absolutely nothing comes within an order of magnitude of your price range, I think.

Yes, for $75, buy a Jansport. Good products, good warranty.

If above $100, look no further than Tom Bihn.

Save up for a month and get your budget to $150. $50-$75 is going to get you garbage pretty much.

Not true. If a Jansport bag fits with the image you're going with, you honestly can't find a longer lasting bag.

This is the backpack I have, it has tons of space for stuff and has a nice laptop compartment in back. I initially bought it because I needed something big enough to haul around my ridiculous 17" gaming laptop and that fits in it comfortably, so whatever laptop you have will probably fit fine. I can't sat much for how professional/casual it is because I have the fashion sense of a 14 year old nerd boy with boobs, but you can look at it for yourself. If you want me to take pictures of the inside and stuff to get a better idea of pockets then I can do that later tonight.

Well thanks for the recommendations, folks. I see a lot of other people at school with Jansports, but I figured they were much cheaper (in price and quality) than they actually are. Guess I'll just get one of the higher-end models that meet my storage and durability needs. Cheers.

FYI - Timbuk2 bags are on sale at theclymb.com right now (as well as sierra trading post and REI), let me know if you need an invite or anything.

My fiance has a Jansport that she's had for 15 years now. I've got one that's lasted me about 12. They also do free repairs, last I checked. They seriously just last forever; the only reason people stop having them is because they lose them or forget that they're covered by warranty if a disaster happens.

I couldn't find a store near me selling exactly the Jansport I wanted -- think it was called "Covert" or something -- so I went to Office Depot and bought a Swiss Gear backpack that was in my price range and looked like it fit my needs. Put my backpack + binder + stuff in it, and it all seems to fit pretty well. Bag is also really comfortable to wear. I would've preferred all-black instead of bluish, for a slightly more professional look, but whatevs. It was $64.99 ($70 after tax).
