You know, with Planetary Resources and other groups making a legitimate case for near-future asteroid mining, I wouldn't be betting on the long term value of precious metals.

That said...anything new on Obama? Looks like since he got back from the Middle East he's been doing standard publicity stuff...meeting sports teams, dinners, etc.

I'm surprised people aren't making a bigger deal of Turkey and Israel normalizing relations though. That in and of itself is a pretty big deal - it's really in those two nation's best interests to work together. If those two, Saudi, Jordan, and Egypt can stay friends, that's a big step towards some long-term stability in the region.

That is a big IF though, but I agree that the media is totally ignoring it. "Competent president makes progress in an unstable region." Just isn't a good headline, I guess?

Good for Hagel, I know there was grumbling on this board about how they didn't want a republican sec def, but between this decision and his outrage at that bullshit rape pardon, I see so far Hagel is doing right by the country.

Now if John Brennan does as he has talked about and gives the drone program over to the military we might actually have some knowedge about the drone program and some accountability. My god its almost like we'll have a real democracy.

I'm tentatively hopeful. I'm very glad to see Hagel making some waves, though arguably he could be doing this just to let everyone know there's a new boss in town. Maybe it's like prison, where you have to beat the crap out the first guy who crosses your path to let everyone know not to fuck with you.

He still did it, I don't think he'd undo it to prove a stupid point. Hagel was actually boots on the ground in vietnam, I think he probably saw a bunch of bullshit that was bogged down in bullshit, and decided to cut it. Hopefully he'll move forward on getting our troops out of afganistan and leave the fucker Karzai to his fate.

We need more people who were boots on the ground running the military. People who have never been in that position don't know what it's like. Also, most places where the military runs things (the constant worry of people in the military being in charge of the military) those people were never boots on the ground either. A lot of officers here aren't that way either. They're more like corporate flunkies.

Isn't Kahn formerly a banker? I think he'd really know his stuff in that regard.

It's very weird to me reading a CNN comments section (I think it was CNN?) and seeing some folks, when the issue of the unlikelihood of extradition being based in the retrial being anathema to the Constitutional prohibitions against Double Jeopardy, arguing that American laws have no basis here, because Italy

Technically its not double jeapardy because in Italy (possibly the US I've don't know) they can petition an applate court decision to the supreme court, even when the appellate decision was pretty much a "no evidence to support any claim the prosecution is making".

I believe the US in one our extradition treaties has a clause about not allowing extradition in cases of acquittal or when someone has served a sentence. Even if Italy convicts her in absentee I strongly doubt she'll be heading back to Italy, there is not an idiot in this country that thinks a US citizen should be allowed to be retried after being acquitted in a foreign country.

The real weirdness is that they allow the state to appeal criminal matter at all. In the US, once the defendant prevails, that is the end of the process.

President Obama really agreed to not do any recess appointments? I wonder if this has anything to do with the rumblings about recess appointments being unconstitutional. I think I heard rumblings about that, though precious little in the way of facts to back it up.

How could it be unconstitutional? The power is expressly granted by the constitution.

    Recess appointments aren't unconstitutional.

What was questionable about the last round was that Congress wasn't technically in recess. Because the house is full of shitfuckers. But there sure were a lot of Very Angry Republicans saying "when I return to Washington after my vacation I'll have a thing or two to say to the president about breaking the law! We're not in recess!"

Yeah, recess appointments are specifically constitutional. Congress has gotten around this by leaving a few guys behind who don't mind having all of DC's escorts to themselves for a few weeks, who then just bang the gavel a few times to both open and close a session in under a minute. Voila, Congress was never recessed, and no appointments can be made.

This, unfortunately though, is definitely one of those instances of "both sides do it". No moral high ground for Dems here.

Edit: Although I do still await the day when this means those Congressmen show up in hoodies and pajama-bottoms with all the spirit of a college freshman at his 9 AM "Intro to Communications" course.

Technically that would violate the rules. Which is how Danny Davis got ejected from the chamber while Trayvon Martin was newsworthy. Arguably this could be used as a stealth power grab. Have a quorum of your caucus show up in White Tie and demand that anyone in such informal attire as a business suit be removed from the chamber. Oh, and also we're still going to vote on that omnibus spending bill; with amendments...
the House then adopted a resolution, offered as a question of the privileges of the House, requiring Members to wear proper attire as determined by the Speaker [...]
