My lil half-sister likes to try all types of new music. Caught her listening to nirvana. Johnny Cash too. Not bad for a 16 year old. Anyway, she's been listening to some whiney stuff lately. I wanna remind her she crazy so I'm looking for some nice death metal. Shit to break stuff too. Friend gave me a mix cd of some good stuff. Some of it had acustic stuff in it. Said they was swedish? Only trouble is I lost the cd so...ya know. I'ma check out slayer, megadeath, gwar, danzing, huh...that's all I know. Any requireded listening?
Opeth, At The Gates, In Flames, Darkane, The Haunted, Soilwork, Hypocrisy, Dimension Zero, Cult of Luna. Good starting points for any soon-to-be metalhead. Actually, great bands for any metalhead. Oh, and they're all swedish, too.
Wait, Red Sparowes is..... Post-Metal? Wtf. I've never heard of that term before. They are as metal as Mogwai. Which is kinda, but not really the main point behind their stuff I think.
A good place to start is with power metal, I think:
Blind Guardian (German Power Metal)
Hammerfall (ditto)
Dragonforce (British Power Metal)
Demons & Wizards (German/American Power Metal)
Iced Earth (Amwerican Power Metal)
Sonata Arctica (I don't know where this is from)
Luca Turilli / Rhapsody of Fire (Italian Power Metal)
And just for shits and giggles try your hand at some crazy stuff too:
Dillinger Escape Plan (American Mathcore (crazy technical stuff with a wierd time signature, almost impossible to listen to unless you're really in the mood for it))
65daysofstatic (Not really metal, Wikipedia calls it instrumental post-rock/ math-rock. But it's really bloody good whatever it is)
Edit: Nightwish? Epic metal? Do you have any idea what you're talking about?
Also, Nightwish suck.
You might want to ease her into the genre with bands like KSE, 36 Crazyfists, Shadows Fall... they've got some clean vocals so she won't completely tune out because of the screams.
Amorphis' Tales from the Thousand Lakes, and Elegy Albums, for some folky Death Metal.
At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul for probably the best Metal album of all time
Morbid Angel - Domination
Opeth - Mornignrise
Carcass - Heartwork
Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses
Arch Enemy - Anthems of Rebellion
Everygrey - anything at all by these guys.
Dark Tranquillity - The Gallery - this is Sweedish metal at its utter best
In Flames - their earlier stuff is awesome
Bolt Thrower - For Victory - just damn good War death metal
Death - Symbolic - one of the standard bearers of metal
Anathema - Judgement
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse - The most seminal black metal album ever
Samael - Eternal - getting a bit industrial, but awesome nonetheless
Sentenced - almost anything by these guys, though Amok and Frozen are fucking awesome
Trivium is the band that got me into more Hardcore metal, but they're pretty overrated at this point. Check out Ascendancy, though, it's a quality album. Other than that, a few of my favorites that haven't been mentioned yet...
As I Lay Dying
Evergreen Terrace
Throwdown
God Forbid
I'd say Iron Maiden, Children of Bodom, Dimmu Borgir, Definetly agree with the Nightwish and Trivium are pretty good to. I also like killswitch engage all really good bands.
Truth. Maiden is fucking awesome, just read the lyrics. They dont sing about whiney bullshit, they sing about stuff that is awesome like World Wars, mercernarys, the end of the world, epic poems and all sorts of other cool shit.

DEFINITELY pick up some Iron Maiden. I suggest the Powerslave album or Number of the Beast.
Get some Machine Head, first two albums were awesome when Logan Mader was in the band.
I LOVE what All That Remains has been putting out. The new album is really good and shows a lot of diversity. Pick up some Killswitch Engage too if you're into the scream/growl/clean vox.
I grew up listening to Candiria, At The Gates, old In Flames (The Jester Race...great album), Sepultura, Soulfly...all that good stuff.
And if you wanna get crazy, pick up some Yngwie Malmsteen...guilty pleasur.
reccomending dragonforce should be a bannable offense
Except when they specifically ask for cheesy power metal.
I am going to see a concert with them, Killswitch Engage, Chimaira, and He Is Legend on the 26th. I like all the other bands, so even if dragonforce sucks live (which is something that I've heard), it will be worth it.
HAHa 3 Inches of Blood might be overwhelming to someone new to metal. But they are the future of metal!
Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and some Metallica are good ways to lean someone into metal. Even stuff like Ac/dc and Zeppelin. I doubt you will find people who are able to stand 'Death metal' right from the get go. If you must get her into stuff with growly voices go with - In Flames, Children of Bodom

And I'm pretty sure the OP only requested death metal here, so I'm not sure why we're seeing posts full of power metal. (Though in any context I would second a recommend of Blind Guardian, who I feel to be the absolute best of the best of melodic/power metal genre, though many of their albums hold great head-banging potential as well - see Imaginations from the Other Side.)

Note: I don't listen to any of these bands but my friends at school almost exclusively listened to Death Metal and these are the names I do remember, not sure if they all fit into the genre, probably not with the ridiculous amount of subgenres in the "metal-scene".
That being said not everyone will develop a taste for heavy metal music, even years of exposure did not bring me around to it or made me see the light or absence thereoff(haha)
Not everyone who likes rock music will enjoy heavy metal as I can testify ; maybe your sister is developing a good taste in music instead :P

While he did say Death Metal, the examples of the style of things he's looking into aren't death metal, which imo, kind of opens things up a bit.
As to a suggestion, I have to recommend the frequently overlooked Stormtroopers of Death. Bigger Than the Devil is probably better to start someone off with than their first album, Speak English or Die, if they're not already into metal.
I saw 3 Inches of Blood with Cradle of Filth. Awesome awesome show. Yes, 3 Inches is like parody metal but it's fun. I listen to the album sometimes while playing WoW. It's great to just kill things to Deadly Sinners!
I used to listen to lots of metal back in the day. My quick list would have to include (this being all pre-1998...just about the time these bands fell off) :
Amorphis' Tales from the Thousand Lakes, and Elegy Albums, for some folky Death Metal. At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul for probably the best Metal album of all time
Morbid Angel - Domination
Opeth - Mornignrise Carcass - Heartwork
Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses Arch Enemy - Anthems of Rebellion

I could probably go on.
This guy knows what he's talking about. Slaughter of the Soul is indeed one of the greatest metal albums, if not truly the best, of all time. Arch Enemy is interesting to listen to because the lead singer is a chick that can really growl. The Dark Tranquility is essential (and the early in flames stuff is also basically just dark tranquility). Bolt Thrower is amazing also, but I would personally recommend In Battle There Is No Law. Death is amazing, the Live in LA Dvd is awesome. I could probably go on now.
First off: SLAYER, can't say it enough. Reign in Blood, get it, NOW.
Don't forget Soilent Green, a Relatively unknown but SUPER badass band out of new Orleans
Id also suggest Finntroll, a kickASS band from Finland with a REALLY original sound.
Other suggestions:
Dying Fetus
Hammerfall
hypocrisy
MYrkskog
Marduk
NILE <--- (awesome)
Rhapsody (good for a laugh)
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum (Not all of their stuff is "metal" but when they rock out, it's fucking HARD. One of my all time favorite bands. get the album "of natural history")
looks like Im spent, good luck
holy crap I jsut realized I don't think anyone mentioned PANTERA!!!! definitely not the "best" metal out there but a part of it's history no doubtand worth listening to.

Angel City Outcasts too.
Let 'em eat fucking pineapples!
Also, Darkest Hour is a good metal band for people who aren't quite "in to" the genre yet.
Also...Machine Head. Those guys are vastly underrated. Look up their song Imperium. Now.
Wait, Red Sparowes is..... Post-Metal? Wtf. I've never heard of that term before. They are as metal as Mogwai. Which is kinda, but not really the main point behind their stuff I think.

Also, Nightwish suck.
Try Dragonland's CD Astronomy over the boredom that has become dragonforce. Also i highly recommend Galeneryus' - The flag of punishment.
Also: page 26 of the metal thread answers all of your questions.

Especially Post-The Crusade. Way to shit on fans.
They can't play live for shit. How they aren't thoroughly embarrassed on stage is beyond me.
reccomending dragonforce should be a bannable offense
dang you know what's up, and so do a lot of others
pick up some cannibal corpse and cryptopsy if you're looking for solid death (and tech death) metal

OH HELLS YES! Add to that 3 INCHES OF BLOOD!!!!
