The galaxy holds its collective breath as the New Republic and the Empire maintain an uneasy truce. While both sides continue to gear up for another full scale war, there are those who hope the the peace can last and the galaxy has truly seen its last great conflict.

High above the Mid-Rim planet of Lannik, an unmarked freighter enters realspace. Its passengers are on a mission that has consequences more far-reaching than they could know...

Chendaro Vaartan, Imperial soldier, government representative to a former enemy, and now one of a small class of a new generation of Jedi Knights, reflected on the past few days as he stared out the viewport of the Polar Gem. His life had been a whirlwind of changed perceptions and new discoveries condensed into just a couple of years on a jungle planet. He'd joined the Jedi Academy because he was ordered to, and just like any good soldier he knew how to follow orders. However instead of finding a structured training program, he instead found a new Jedi Master who was learning just as much as his new students. Chen, along with a few other of the students (Keiran Halcyon amongst them), took charge and helped Luke Skywalker build out an actual training regimen. Over the course of the first year, Chen found himself forming a sort of bond with his fellow Jedi. He excelled in his training of course, leaning on his years of military discipline. Before long he was one of the top duelist in the class, and his tactical experience caused others to look to him as a sort of leader.

It had been during an extremely strong rainstorm when Chen received a request from Skywalker to meet in a clearing not far from the main temple. What he thought was an impromptu training exercise actually turned out to be a sort of graduation ceremony for him and several of his fellow apprentices. The Jedi Master had commended each of them for their quick mastery of the Jedi arts, and for their willingness and ability to take on students of their own. Chen had thought fondly on his two charges, Rek and Berru, both whom he had come to see as almost family, if not at least fellow squad mates.

Before their robes had completely dried from the rain they had all been given their first missions. In Chen's case, they were charged by Skywalker and the Lannik, Tanis Koth, with a cryptic mission to help resolve a crisis with the Lannik High Court and to stop the planet from falling into Hutt hands. Chen suspected that Koth wished to keep the Imperials from taking over as well, but didn't overtly state as such with the former stormtrooper in his presence.

During the week in hyperspace, Chen had studied the dossier provided by Koth over and over. He insured his apprentices did the same. Still, at the back of his mind, he always wondered "Why send an Imperial to stop the Hutts and Empire from gaining control of Lannik?" Chen suspected, much like the motives for being sent to the Jedi Academy originally, that he wasn't being told the whole truth...

A chirp from the ship's comm dragged him back to reality. Nodding his approval to Rek, the Duros accepted the incoming transmission. It loudly crackled over the speakers, "Approaching ship with designation ‘Polar Gem’, transmit destination, passenger manifest, and purpose of visit.” The terse voice cut off quickly. Rek noted that the request most likely came from the Lannik Gun ship that was now matching their path towards the planet…

Chendaro nudged Rek. "Go ahead, kid. Keep it brief and respectful."

Rek frowned, cleared his throat and thumbed the frequency open.

"Lannik-279er, Polar Gem. Three beings on board: Jedi Master Vaartan and Jedi Padawans Seccune and Na'Maak. Enroute to the capital on a umm..."

Rek stalled and Chendara prompted him whispering "recruiting"

"on a recruiting mission on behalf of the Jedi Academy. We are, ummm, hoping to find those among your great peoples who are strong in the Force and who can take up the Jedi banner of justice and, ummm, courage."

Chen closed his eyes and ever-so-slightly shook his head.

The newly-minted Knight placed a hand on the Padawan's shoulder. "Don't worry about it, Rek. It's not like they're going to start shooing at us."

"I see..." The Lannik over the comm did not do a good job stifling a laugh. After a short pause, he composed himself and continued. "Honored Jedi...we have no scheduled arrival from your Academy in our daily manifest. Our borders are currently closed to all unauthorized ships. Come back when you get approval." His voice was interrupted, and the jedi could hear faint comm chatter coming through from the other ship. It sounded like a heated debate was going back and forth, and the pilot carelessly had left his comm open. Most of the conversation was muffled, however Rek thought he heard "we'll deal with the jedi..." amongst the jumbled conversation.

After several tense moments, the man responded. “Polar Gem, we will escort you to the surface. You will not deviate from this course or you will be shot down.”

With that, the gunship lazily pulled away from the Polar Gem and made it’s way towards the planet, the two fighters maintaining their position behind the ship, as if waiting for it to make a move one way or another.

Rek grudgingly sent an acknowledgement over the comm and sets the Polar Gem on a course to follow the gunship. As their ship began to descend into the atmosphere, the gunship broke away and one of the Z-95s took lead.

As they approached Palesia, the Jedi noted the sprawling city from his viewport. In general the city appeared to be broken into various sections, with some appearing quite affluent. It was obvious even to the untrained eye that there were several more impoverished areas along the outskirts. At the center of the city rose an impressive domed-structure with several opulent buildings surrounding it. “That must be the High Court’s location” Rek mused.

Their destination was a small space port on the edge of the city in one of the seedier districts. As they began to touch down, Rek noted the dilapidated nature of most of the ships. A vast assortment of life skittered on the ground, going from ship to ship. Some appeared to be mechanics, refueling new arrivals or helping with departures. Others were jawas or other species hawking their wares to whomever would give them attention. Still others corralled groups of people on and off of ships, some of those groups in chains or binders.

As the Polar Gem touched down, Rek and Chen noticed a group headed straight for their ship. The figure leading them was a human dressed in finery that designated one affiliated with the Lannik High Court. Chen noted the group accompanying him all were armed, with weapons drawn. The leader looked up at the ship with a disapproving scowl.

"Quick refresh: we're here as representatives from the new Order to make formal relations with the High Court of Lannik." Chendaro pulled his formal robes over the New Republic-issue fatigues. "Objective one: resolve this situation without a diplomatic incident." He buckled his lightsaber on the robe's belt. "Objective two: make contact with Drex Samlon."

Motioning for the Padawans to follow, Chen began the walk to the exit ramp. "If we're separated or the situation goes Trill Usk, make your way back to the ship. We'll rendezvous here." He stopped, and laughed. "Sorry if I come off as a little intense. Old training. Use your heads, but trust in the Force. Master Skywalker wouldn't have assigned us this mission if he wasn't confident that we could accomplish it, and we have an impressive array of skills between the three of us."

Turning back to the ramp, he put his hand over the release. "Ready?"

  • KlivianKlivian Registered User regular
Rek smoothed the lapels on his well-cut navy and maroon suit and adjusted the small silver pin at his collar: the six pointed starburst of the Na'Maak Shipping Company. He fastened his lightsaber to his belt as he stooped to descend the boarding ramp.

"Ready, Master," he said, though doubt crept into the back of his mind. This mission was more likely to forge them and refine them into something that none of them expected and whether that bode good or ill, who could tell?

  • SakutianSakutian Registered User regular
Berru checked to make sure that her toolkit was fastened securely to her belt and that her blaster pistol was tucked away within in the confines of her Jedi robes as she made her way down the ramp. Chen's words helped he to steady herself.

"I won't let you down master."

Berru and Rek followed Chendaro down the boarding ramp, their eyes darting across the spaceport trying to take in all details. The inhabitants of the port spanned across several species, though Rek noted several humans and weequays leading groups of various species into large freighters. Some of the groups were chained together as they shuffled up various boarding ramps. Other ships appeared to be mining freighters, many with Imperial markings upon them.

As they approached the awaiting group, Chen sized up the leader of the challenging party. The human wore finery befitting a member of the Lannik High Court..most likely an advisor from another government or perhaps a large corporation. The man appeared to stand as if almost relaxed, but Chen noted there was a hint of military-trained confidence behind the facade.

Before any of them could utter a greeting, the man bowed in almost mock formality and rambled out a firm greeting. "Master Jedi, it is an honor to have ones such as you gracing us with your presence..." Each syllable dripped with disdain. "It seems the rumors of your untimely extinction were exaggerated."

He held up his hands in mock sadness. "I am afraid though, that your presence is not welcome, nor authorized at this time. The current political climate is....not conducive to ones such as yourselves. I fear your arrival will only make things worse, so I must insist you depart as soon as my technicians refuel your ship." The guards did not raise their weapons, but clearly appeared tense, as if waiting for the command to open fire.

"Not conducive to the political climate? I'm a citizen of the Empire, not the New Republic. The new Jedi Order is not a political body, but one devoted to knowledge - wherever it may be found. If Lannik does not want to be a part of that, we certainly won't force you. But I suggest that there is much we might learn from another."

Chen rolled his shoulders, making a show out of massaging non-existing kinks. "Besides, we've been cooped up in that ship for days. Surely a trio of scholars wouldn't be a political burden, if allowed to stay a short while? And on a personal note, I was hoping to look up a buddy of mine. You know how old soldiers get. It's been ages since we shared a drink and exaggerated about previous exploits.

"That's not too much to ask, is it?" The Knight offered the official a small, patient smile.

Watching the chained humanoids being steered aboard the idling ships made Berru’s stomach turn. She’d witnessed people being sold into indentured servitude to pay off their debts to one of the casinos, but even they’d had laws in place to protect their rights. Slavery was a harsh reality of the universe that Berru had been confronted with at a young age, but she’d always found it distasteful.

Pushing her feelings aside Berru walked down the ramp until she was standing between Chen and the leader of their welcoming party. “Pardon me sir, but our ship suffered some damage in hyperspace, if you will allow it I’d like to perform some repairs before we make our departure. It would only take me a few hours.”

Lying and deception wasn’t the Jedi way, but Berru knew they would need time to accomplish their mission, and she could buy them half a day at least.

The official scowled at the jedi, his voice carrying an almost predatory tone. "All the same, I suggest you leave. You'll find your kind is not welcome here...it could prove dangerous to stay..."

Chen glanced around and started to piece some things together. Instead of being escorted to a hangar connected to the High Court district, they were led to a remote location in the city. Rek noted that the other inhabitants of their particular area had slowly dispersed, as if sensing imminent violence.

The jedi sensed the sudden tension in the air. Even someone not attuned to the Force would have noticed. The Weequay behind the official clicked his blaster rifle's safety off, and the other guards seemed to be ready to spring into action.

Chen cursed under his breath, wondering just what was going on that could cause such hostility. Just as he made ready to draw his weapon though, a loud chorus of quickly stepping boots echoed from one of the entrances. Everyone turned to look and saw a man hurriedly walking in, a small group of New Republic officers and officials trying to keep up. The leader of the group stopped in front of the opposing groups, his face flushed as if he had been in a hurry. After composing himself, he pulled some documents from his robes. "I don't know what you're doing Saul Dettun, but you will quit harassing the king's special guests right this moment." He practically thrust the official-looking documents into the other official's face. The guards from both groups eyed each other with open contempt, but made no move towards hostilities.

The official, Saul Dettun, read the documents, his scowl growing larger as he finished. "I heard no such news of the High Court granting these Jedi an audience. I'd just been told by Gaff Sueb, the king's most trusted advisor, that the Jedi were not welcome. What have you been up to Drex?"

The man, who was apparently the Jedi's contact, just smiled as if he'd one a hard fought battle. "I'm surprised Sueb, or most likely his assistant Garm Webb, were willing to let you off your leash." His smile widened at the almost imperceptible growl emanating from Saul Dettun. "Regardless, Sueb failed to consult with the king before making such a proclamation. Thankfully Advisor Nise was kind enough to clarify the matter with His Highness. These documents grant them all the rights of a government dignitary, and should be treated as such. The king is eager to discuss the matter of the prince's disappearance as soon as possible."

"That is an internal matter that the jedi have no business getting involved with!" He complained to no one in particular, "they're probably here to help your precious 'Republic' worm their way farther into the royal family's affairs!" Saul's face was starting to carry a red hue to match his adversary's.

Drex Samlon's smile was replaced with a scowl of his own. "And I'm sure the Empire's involvement here is purely altruistic?" He glanced behind Saul at his guards. "Did you lose your bucketheads? Or will only the Hutts help you do your dirty work?"

Saul Dettun fumed, but made no effort to retort. Composing himself, he turned to the Jedi and nodded curtly before turning to leave. "It seems I shall see you all very soon. I look forward to correcting His Highness's trust of the Jedi." As the group walked towards the exit, Saul looked back at them. "I would advise watching your backs my friends, there are many unsavory types who would see a Jedi as an opportunity to make a name for himself.."

Visibly deflating, Drex turned to the Jedi. "Next time, make sure to mention me to the border patrol."

Chen gave their contact a wry smile, and extended his hand in greetings. "I'll do that. I'm Jedi Knight Chendaro Vartaan, and these are my Padawans Berru Secune and Rek Na'Maak. You said the prince has disappeared?"

  • KlivianKlivian Registered User regular
Rek bowed towards Drex and ran through a quick meditation exercise to still his hammering heart. Only in retrospect did he realize just how close they came to harm.

Rek pulled his datapad from his jacket pocket and joined the local network. From the briefing he recalled that Crown Prince R'card attended a preparatory school in New Osler. In Rek's experience, schools such as that were long on tradition and short on computer security. Within a few moments he located the school's network node and began to probe its security protocols in an attempt to gain access.

Drex shook Chen's hand as he nodded back at Berru. "Saul Dettun is little more than a thug in an officer's uniform. We're not sure which branch of the Imperial military he comes from, but his loyalty's are no secret. He's a ruthless man, and I don't doubt he'll have a vendetta to settle with you at some point during your visit." He sighed. "However, he is officially considered an attaché to one of the highest advisors to the King. Not only does that make him dangerous on a political level, but he also has nearly full diplomatic immunity, making it very hard to move against him."

The official continued. "And yes, the prince is gone. It is uncertain if he's been kidnapped or ran off somewhere, but he can't be found. All we know is that the High Court is considering it an internal matter, and won't involve the New Republic." He paused to gauge their expressions before continuing. "Normally that would be the end of it. While we certainly want to do everything we can do to help as it benefits both governments, we wouldn't force ourselves into a situation where we're not welcome. However in this case, my handler offworld, Tanis Koth, received a cryptic message. Advisor Guzao Nise sent a short message asking for our help. He stated that there were influences from outside forces at play, but wouldn't say more."

"You've most likely noticed some of the other ships and their passengers in this port. While slavery is illegal here, we've found that the Hutts, possibly with the Imperials' help, have found loopholes to get around the laws. Things like saying they're "indentured servants" or other slimy dealings. We've tried to put a stop to it, but we're finding road blocks at every turn. Someone or something has infiltrated many facets of this planet's government and has corrupted it. Lanniks never abided slavery or the Hutt Empire. Hell, this planet has been one of the few reasons the worms haven't expanded into more Mid-rim territories."

"We feel these events and the prince's disappearance are not entirely unrelated. Because we are completely blocked out, we need you to get an audience with the royal family, and offer your assistance. Find their son, and I don't doubt you'll find out what the Hutts are up to."

Drex motioned for them to follow him. "I've got a speeder we can take to the High Court district. I will have some of my guards here watch your ship. While Saul may have directed you to this area to keep any eyes off of any "unfortunate" accidents, it also helps you lay low. Your ship will be watched much less here than at the High Court's hangar." Of the 7 guards who had accompanied Drex, 5 of them began to set up a portable structure near the Polar Gem. One of the guards motioned to the ship. "She won't get a scratch on her while we're here. We'll make sure it's always prepped and fueled in case you need to take off quickly." The remaining two guards followed Drex.

Rek's datapad beeped a confirmation that access to prep school's system had been granted. Now, what to search for?

Drex and his two soldiers led the three jedi to his speeder, which was a large, elegant-looking, open topped affair. "You've gotta look the part of a noble here" he said with a grin. One of the soldiers got behind the wheel, while another took a position near the back, obviously as a spotter. Chen got in the front passenger seat, while his apprentices took the middle row of seats.

The speeder's engines came to life with a loud whine, and before long the group was leaving the slums far in their wake. Drex's pilot, who Chen had heard referred to as Hamill, was a natural pilot, his precision steering navigating the streets of Lannik's captial as if there was no traffic at all. Before long the main citadel of the capital started to grow larger ahead of them. The scenery had improved dramatically the nearer they got as well. What at points looked like the more dilapidated parts of Mos Eisley soon gave way to high manicured lawns, sculpted trees, and elegant statues of famous Lanniks of the past. Rek thought he recognized one of the statues, that of a Lannik wearing distinct robes, one of his eyes replaced by a nasty looking battle scar.

Finally, the speeder began to slow as they crossed a cobblestone bridge that spanned a pristine body of water. Waiting on the other side was an older looking Lannik, his robes nearly blinding Berru because they were so elaborate. As their transport came to a stop, the soldiers and Drex got out. The Lannik shook the man's hand firmly, while smiling widely at the three jedi as they got out of the speeder. "It's good to see you made it in one peace. I heard Saul Dettun caused you some headaches. "

Drex interjected before any of them could respond. "It's not safe for you to be out in the open advisor Nise, especially without an honor guard. Gaff Sueb, and his...friends...would profit greatly by your untimely demise." He kept looking at the other groups of people milling in the courtyard of the capital citadel. Most appeared to be workers or tourists. One group, made up of an assortment of species, seemed to slowly be approaching them while pointing at various structures in the courtyard. Drex seemed to visibly relax. "I think we got lucky though..let's go..."

As he turned to lead them towards the main building, Chen caught his arm. "No...wait." Rek besides him nodded. "Yes...something's not right." The others stood their ground, looking around nervously. Rek noted that the group lazily making their way towards them were made up of species one would find in certain criminal elements...two weequays, a trandoshan, a rodian, two humans, and a twi'lek. "Say Drex...sure seems like the Hutts like to send their lackeys here to vacation..." He noted a blaster tucked into the waist of one of the weequays.

Chen kept his senses pushed out to their limits, trying to detect whatever possible danger that awaited them. Something elusive was out there. Over several minutes, he started to relax, hoping it was just a case of paranoia. Just as he started to let go of Drex's arm, he saw a glint behind some bushes across the courtyard. "Sniper!" Without thinking, he quickly pushed Drex out of the way and tackled Nise...a blaster bolt buzzing through the air where the Lannik's head had just been.

The group of "tourists" started running towards them, clearly giving up all pretenses of a disguise.

The Knight drew his lightsaber, orange blade thrumming to life. "Stay behind me, Advisor." Chen reached out with the Force in an attempt to push them to the ground, but in his haste failed to do little more than ruffle their clothing. "Berru, Rek, keep an eye out for that assassin."
    Terrible rolls. Terrible.

Minor: Activate Born Leader (+1 to attack rolls for allies)
    Move: Draw lightsaber
Standard: Force Slam on as many Thugs as I can catch

Force Slam (Force point) (1d10 is not 1d20): 1d20+11 16, fail
    Force Slam (Force point): 1d10+11 15 6d6 17
17 / 2 = 8 points of damage to whomever I caught in the blast.

The lead thug, a rather large Trandoshan, crossed his arms in front of him and braced for the telekinetic attack. The blast hit him, but rather than topple him and his partners over, they merely slid back a few centimeters. Letting out a hiss that sounded something akin to a chuckle, he unholstered his blaster pistol and opened fire on the Chen. The Jedi Knight barely managed to get his blade up to parry the shot before it could scorch his face.

One of Drex's guards immediately rolled out of the incoming barrage of shots and took up a defensive position behind a pillar supporting a statue. He hastily fires a few rounds off at the lead thug, missing widely.

The assassin, annoyed with missing his target, sets his sights on Chen as he weaves his blade in front of him to block the incoming blaster shots. He lets out a slow breathe, letting his aim steady. Just as he pulls the trigger, Chen ducks under another blaster shot...the assassin's attack harmlessly bouncing off the side of the speeder. Cursing, he starts steadies his aim again.

As the battle begins to intensify, another thug dashes behind a small wall and starts spraying shots in the general direction of one of the guards. His shots nearly drop Hamill as he tries to dodge out of the path of danger. Sparks showered from a broken street light the shots hit, burning his face.

Advisor Nise quickly dives out of the line of fire and pulls a blaster from a hidden fold of his robe. "For an older gentleman, he sure moves well," thought Berru. The jedi couldn't quite hear what the elder Lannik yelled out, but she and her allies all yelled out a cheer of defiance at his words.

Two more thugs, both weequays, yell out some kind of warcry in their language and charge towards the group of defenders, their blaster pistols spewing energy bolts everywhere. Chen started to find himself pressured by the ever increasing flow of fire, while Rek let out a yelp of surprise as a blaster bolt barreled towards his chest.

Thug A - Move: Pulls blaster. Standard: Attack Chen (1d20+9=27, 3d6+2=14) HIT! @JDarksun you can try and deflect that if you want. Just give me a roll in OOC if you so choose, and I can come back and edit.

Advisor Nise - Move: get behind over. Swift: Pull blaster (quick draw). Standard: Inspire Confidence All allies in line of site get +1 to attacks and skill checks. This stacks with Chen's buff

Thug C - Moves halfway towards your group. Standard: Attacks Chen (1d20+9=25, 3d6+2=10) Hit! @JDarksun you can try and deflect this one as well, though you'll get diminishing returns on your attempts. You can apply the +1 bonus from Nise on this roll though. If you attempt to deflect the first attack, then your UtF modifier on this one would be +7

Thug D - Moves halfway towards your group. Standard: Attacks Rek (1d20+9=29, 3d6+2=10) Critical Hit! Ouchie. You could try to negate energy this. With Nise's buff your UtF bonus is +15. Rek instinctively flared the Force as the blaster bolt streaked towards him and impacted his chest. He felt a surge of heat spread from his chest to his extremities as the Force absorbed the raw energy of the blaster bolt. He had practiced this very skill countless times back at the Academy against low-power remotes and fires, but until this moment there had always be a lingering doubt in the back of his mind that he might not be able to use it in a real fight.

Surging with confidence, he ignited his lightsaber and drew the heavy blaster pistol from his leg holster. He did his best to put himself between the sniper and Drex. "Stay down, sir!"

The situation was grim. What little Rek knew of tactics told him their position on the bridge put them at a distinct disadvantage. They needed to get off the bridge as soon as possible or find a way to put their attackers on the defensive.

“Don’t worry master I’ll take care of the assassin!” Leaping into the seat of the nearby landspeeder Berru glanced down at the controls. These types of vehicles were an uncommon sight on Bespin, but she’d studied schematics for a few models over the years. Luckily the engineers that had modified this vehicle hadn’t changed the layout of the controls. The turbine engines roared to life on either side of Berru as she set her sights on the assassin.

”There is no emotion, there is peace.” The words echoed in the back of Berru’s mind as she steadied her nerves. Perhaps she hadn't mastered the the force or a lightsaber, but she was still a member of the Jedi Order, and she would not fail in her mission.

The speeder jumped towards the Trandoshan at the head of the advancing mob. She doubted any of the mercenaries in her path were being paid well enough to risk being run down.
Move Action(2): Enter the landspeeder. Move 12 squares towards the assassin.
    Swift Action: Activate the landspeeder.

As the speeder advanced on the group of thugs, several darted out of the way, opening fire on the apprentice as she barreled towards them. She was forced to duck down in her seat as blaster bolts pinged loudly against her ship...some closer than she would prefer.

Standing behind Rek, Drex pulled his own blaster pistol out and started trading fire with the advancing thugs. "Like hell I'm staying down! Better me than Nise." He rapidly fired several shots at the trandoshan charging towards them, his shots hitting everything around him but his target. The guard next to him, following his boss's lead, started firing on the Trandoshan, causing it to hiss in annoyance as it tried to avoid the swarm of blaster bolts. "'Atta boy Hamill. Let's bullseye that womprat!" Drex laughed in defiance. Was he actually enjoying this?

The final two thugs dive out of the way of Berru's speeder. With so many targets demanding their attention, they randomly fire shots off at any and everyone, trying their best to stay alive. It was clear they had never faced a jedi, let alone three, before.

Cursing, the trandoshan suddenly found himself dancing around Chen's stabs and swings. Between Chen's attacks, the mercenary fires shots off in the jedi's face, only for the shots to be deflected by his lightning reflexes. Sweat poured down the Jedi's forehead as he felt the heat of the blaster shots so close to finding their mark.

Drex's other bodyguard pulls a grenade out of his pocket. "Sir, we need to put these guys down quick before they get reinforcements!" Chucking the grenade, three of the thugs take cover as it explodes..peppering them with debris.

The assassin started to panic as he saw the approaching speeder carrying a very angry Jedi. Standing, he pulls his blaster pistol and begins to fire on Berru. "Let's see what you've got little Jedi." His spray of fire bounces close to Berru's head, causing her to duck down again in her chair.

Three of the thugs give up firing on Chen for fear of hitting one of their own, and start opening fire on Rek and Advisor Nise, a hail of blaster fire nearly overwhelming their positions. While Nise is forced to duck under cover, Rek valiantly swats many of the incoming shots out of the air, sparks from near misses showering around him.

Pulling himself back out of cover, the Lannik advisor steadies his gun on the blur of motion made up of Chen and the trandoshan thug. Holding his breath, Nise waits for the opportune time, and squeezes the trigger. Just as Chen dodges out of the way of an incoming attack, Nise's blaster shot sails through, scoring the lizard on the shoulder. It hissed in pain, momentarily stunned. The Lannik let out a grunt of satisfaction towards Drex. "That's how it's done my friend."

The blaster bolt slips through Rek's whirling blade and he sucks in air through his teeth as the bolt impacts him. Even in the commotion, it was simple to trace the bolt back to the thug that fired it. Rek aimed the blaster he held in his his offhand and carefully squeezed off a shot in the thug's direction. Rek smiled in satisfaction as the blaster bolt found slipped through a weak spot in the thug's armor.

Ducking out of sight to avoid the incoming blaster fire forced Berru to take her eyes off of the assassin for a few seconds, and at the speed she was moving that was far too long. She heard the heavy thud of something bouncing off of the side panel of the speeder and a startled shout. As she shot back up in her seat she hit her head on the control panel. Ignoring the minor pain she glanced around wildly for any sign of the assassin.

Finding spots that hopefully provided cover from the crazy jedi behind the wheel, a trio of thugs open fire on the defenders. Clearly they hadn't intended their prey to put up such a resistance, and their attacks became more and more desperate as their initial plan fell apart. Rek could hear them arguing with each other, trying to decide what to do.

Taking advantage of their confusion, Drex aims carefully before letting loose a volley of blaster fire after Rek's target. The blaster bolts finish off the jedi's work, as the thug falls to the ground, several smoking wounds emanating from his armor. His guard next to him follows up the volley with his own grenade, which soared perfectly through the air, landing within the group of confused thugs. The loud explosion threw chunks of debris into them. More and more their resolve to be faltering.

For a brief moment, all battle stopped, as if everyone was catching their breath. As the smoke cleared, Chen and the Trandoshan thug looked around in confusion before locking gazes. The lizard snaps his blaster up and fires a shot off at the jedi, who quickly deflects it. As if on cue, the battle begins to rage around them again.

Drex's guard takes advantage of the confusion and opens fire on one of the dazed targets of Hamill's grenade attack, causing him to scramble out of the line of fire. Guzao Nise joins the guard in firing on the thug, causing him to curse in panic as he tries to get out of the way.

As Berru looked around to find her target, a sudden explosion rocked the side of her speeder. Turning her head, she found that the assassin was now firing on her speeder since he couldn't seem to get to her. An evil grin spread on his face as he opened fire again.

Several of the thugs continue to trade fire with Drex and his men. The battle still undecided, neither side unwilling to give an inch.

Whipping the speeder back around to face the assassin Berru waited until she was within a few feet of him and then leapt out of the vehicle. Tumbling across the ground she rolled with her momentum and regaining her feet as quickly as possible. She plucked her lightsaber from her belt and ignited the weapon, a blade a green energy billowing at of the hilt with a sharp hiss. She lashed out at the assassin but her lightsaber didn't manage to do anything more than force him to duck as her clusmy attack lashed past.

The attackers, seeing some of their own fall, start to fire desperately on Nise and his defenders. One of the weequays yelled out defiantly "Kill the Lannik, he must die!" He levels his pistol and fires off more shots at the Advisor's position, forcing him to desperately duck under cover. The weequay starts to laugh as he looks back to his accomplices. "See! He's scared, let's get h..." before he could finish his sentence, a blaster bolt tears into his chest, causing a gasp of pain before he falls to the ground dead. Drex stands in front of NIse. "You're gonna have to get through us first!"

Drex's guard chuckles as he snaps off another shot at the other weequay, causing him to yelp in fear as he tries to dodge the fire. "Amateurs..." This wasn't the first time they had faced an ambush it seemed to Rek.

The two thugs, apparently not willing to go down without a fight, fire in tandem on Rek and Drex's guards. The Duros Jedi struggled to keep up with the torrent of fire. Hamill ducks back behind the statue pillar, cursing as chunks of duracrete are blasted out of the spot he was just in.

Seeing Advisor Nise's precarious situation, Chendaro drew deeply on the Force in an attempt to quickly resolve the conflict. The Force flowed through him, and several quick strikes brought one of the thugs to his knees.

Seeing his chance, Hamill leans out from behind the pillar and snaps off a clean shot that finishes off Chen's target.

Farther from the commotion, the assassin and Berru square off. Smiling wickedly, he drops his blaster pistol and slowly unsheathes a nasty looking vibroblade. "I once killed a Dathomiri Witch with this blade. You're not much of a jedi, but I'll deal with your friends shortly..." He lunges at the apprentice with a practiced feint before following it up with a wild swing intended to decapitate her. Desperately, the jedi barely manages to get her lightsaber up in time to block the deadly blow. Whatever the weapon was made of, it resisted her energy blade's edge instead of being sheared in half. The assassin chuckled as Berru was shocked by the weapon's resistance. "Let's just say I came prepared Little Jedi...but don't worry too much about it. You won't be around much longer..."

Meanwhile, Guzao Nise and his defenders continued to trade fire with their attackers. Slowly but surely, the thugs were being whittled down to more manageable numbers.

Beads of sweat gathered on Rek's scalp as the fury of the battle intensified. Another bolt came dangerously close and he flared the force to dissipate it. He tapped the Force to re-energize his tired limbs. One thug was a tad too brazen and Rek made him pay for his error with a quick volley from his pistol.

Berru refused to allow her eyes to remain fixed on the strange weapon the assassin was weilding. It was clear to Berru that she was facing an opponent whose skill with a blade exceeded her own. Bringing her lightsaber closer to her watching her opponent for any of sign of an incoming attack. The sounds of battle were dying away and if she could keep herself alive long enough she was certain that Rek and Chen would arrive to assist her.

"You're right I'm not much of a Jedi, but I you'll find that I'm still more than a match for you."

Swift Action: Catch a Second Wind which will bring Berru back upt to 25 hp.
Standard Action: Fight Defensively. Berru gains a +5 bonus to her Reflex Defense until the end of her next turn.

The remaining two thugs realize their mission is a failure and begin to look for a way to escape. Realizing the only way out is over the bridge the defenders currently own, they curse and continue to trade fire with their prey-turned-predators.

Drex and his guard unleash a torrent of fire on one of the remaining thugs, one shot scoring him in the arm. Using his one good limb, he tries to return fire and actually manages to score a direct hit on Drex, who flies backward to land on the ground with a thud. Advisor Nise lets out a shout of despair, but is waved off by the man as he slowly climbs back to his knees. Pulling away a layer of his now-scorched robe, the Lannik spots a charred mark against some body armor. Drex grins as he sighs in relief before standing back up and rejoining the fray.

With the thugs well in hand, Chen ran to confront the assassin. He noted his Padawan's determination and bravery against her for, and felt a swift surge of pride. With an outstretched hand, Chen flung a spray of debris into the hired killer's face to grab their attention. "You've failed in your task. Surrender - drop your weapon, and I promise no harm will come to you."
