Hi all,
Hope this isn't a redundant thread: I searched and only turned up threads from 2011, which I thought was old enough that a new one was warranted.
I'm interested in buying a netbook and would love to hear some recommendations. Basically, I want a very simple, light machine for web browsing, work on Microsoft Office and, if possible, Adobe Dreamweaver. I'm also curious to see if even a pared down netbook could run
Magic Online, as that would be great when traveling.
I've looked at some reviews and
this one seems nice, but I'm not positive.
Thanks!

Or I would look into a refurbished ultrabook, which you can find something with an i3 for around $300-350
It's just that the atom processors that netbooks were based on, are just not that good and the windows experience on them was slow and frustrating. it's why every company has stopped making them now
What exactly is your budget, and just how portable does it need to be?
I would ideally not go much higher than $300. As for portability, I would prefer something that could slip easily into my messenger bag and not weigh it down too much. I don't have specific needs, but the smaller the better, probably.
I'd figure out how to stick more RAM in there and do that as well. Should be cheap enough to fit under your budget.
Edit: Yeah the ASUS or HP are probably better, but I can't find a reliable place that actually has them on sale.
Interesting. I have a tablet but it doesn't quite fill the needs I'd like a netbook for.
That said, maybe you could point to decent "real laptops" for $300-350? I might be able to compromise on size.
(link will go to something else after it expires, for anyone looking at this in the future)

It's a 11.6" Lenovo with decent specs for $380.

This should be a better performer than any Netbook even with just that Pentium. Any of the cheaper Lenovos on Microcenter's site with Core 2 Duos would probably outperform a netbook, even. My buddy who runs his own business making tech support house calls and teaching computer skills for elderly people just got a very similar one as a Windows 8 troubleshooting testbed/workhorse.
Or, another similar choice:

Or if you want to go the AMD route, one of AMD's strengths right now is in the low-end to mid-range laptop CPU space:

Really though I'd jump on the deal a5ehren linked to above, it is a nice little package for the price.
The only downside is, as mentioned, that the Atom processors don't really have the balls to run Windows. If you're comfortable in Linux, that's what I threw on there, and it works amazingly as a word processing/web browsing/email device. I'd recommend you pick one up used if you can forego your Windows apps (or if they play nicely with Wine).
PS, MTGO is probably a no-go on any netbook. I haven't played it in awhile, but the resolution is a crippling factor.
Commenters there seem to be hating on HP in general, but the write-up is convincing. Any thoughts?
The guys at The Wirecutter tend to do their job pretty well, and would take any build qualities problems that HP might of had into account. And really for a sub $500 laptop, your not going to need/want to be using it for more then about 2 years anyway, which I'm sure unless your throwing it around it will last that long at least.
But you could also possibly find something with the same specs for a bit cheaper if you look around at the various deal sites for a bit, or are ok with a refurbished model.
