Laptop HP G6 hinge is broken, how to replace?[Solved]
My friend's laptop hinge or hinge related item broke. I am looking to help them replace it. However I am not sure if the hinge itself or something else on the laptop broke. Any advice on what needs to happen?
Not sure on the image size, so links. http://imgur.com/yKgwdB5
To expand, the top will no longer stay in position, it flops down.
You'd have to replace the entire screen assembly, which is difficult and can damage the LCD, just try and rig something up. it's like a $400 laptop, so a cost effective repair is basically not gonna happen.
Yeah, I told them to get duct tape and just tape it on the back. Also, it is the LED version, we came across hinges that would work on LCD but not LED so I looked that up.
Were considering getting the hinges and taking it to a repair place, think that would work?
On the bottom service label, what are the numbers that come after the G6? The parts aren't all the same.
In most of them, the hinges are attached to a bar that runs up through the bezel and is screwed to the back panel and the LCD itself, see here, labeled 4 (this is for the G6-1Axx models, part number isn't the same for all others even if the external case looks the same).
You don't need to replace the entire assembly, just the hinge/bar component. The part in that link is about $60 from the sites I trust, but googling the part number I did find it as cheap as $35 through Upgradebay.
It's not a terribly difficult repair, but getting the screen bezel apart is touchy, it's easy to break the LCD if you miss one of the hidden screws. The LCD would set you back another $70-100 if you damage it.
Yep. And you're right - the LED and LCD hinges are different on most HP's. The 1000 and 1100 series are gaping holes in the parts list from HP, but 6055B0019901 and 6055B0019902 are the hinges listed for HP G6/G6S/G6T/G6X 15.6" LED displays. (they're separate model numbers for each side, but they're almost always sold as a set, often with just the left model number 901)
I'd start with http://h20141.www2.hp.com/Hpparts/ and use the serial number to confirm the part number - I never trust the part catalog when there's a hole on the exact model and filling in the blanks is usually a pain in the ass.
Don't buy through them, though, prices will be crazy, I only actually use HP's store for warranty repairs. The part numbers I listed above are on Amazon new starting around $30 and used as low as $14. My usual sites for work are $35-45, HP itself will probably be $60. Either way, taking the part number to google works 99% of the time to find decent prices.
Great, was it the same part? If you happen to be in mid-Michigan, send me a PM, if you bring them in to my shop I can sneak you a discount, otherwise, good luck!

We'll probably just take the laptop and hinges to a store and have them repair it to be extra cautious.
You guys were a great help!
