I'm looking for a program that can brute force a RAR file for it's password. Most of what I have found for free is either ridiculously primitive or limits the character length to like 3 unless you buy the software.
I've never found anything worth using, because if the password is at all long it will take a ridiculous amount of time to crack it. There's no known weakness in RAR's password protection like there is with old-style WinZip passwords.
There's what, 52 + 10 + 12ish possible characters? So 74 (let's assume, probably not right at all)...
Let's assume a 10 digit password...
74^10 = 5 × 10^18
So 5 x 10^18 possible combinations. That's a 5 with 18 zeroes after it. Hope you have a powerful computer...
That's probably why no programs give you a free shot over 3 characters. It's basically not going to work with long passwords unless you have a very very very long time to sit about.
RAR password encryption is significantly stronger than ZIP. Brute forcing is the only method available, and it's completely infeasible for any password of non-trivial length. You're better off just re-doing whatever you lost in that archive because it's not going to take less time for your PC to crack the password.
