Windows Image Viewing Software

Hay people.

I'm looking for a good image viewing software for Windows XP. I like the way Microsoft's default image viewer works, but it's not customizable enough. I want some lightweight and fast, and that has something like a showcase function where you see thumbnails of the pictures in a folder, like how setting explorer to Thumbnail works, but with the ability to increase the size of the thumbnails. Any leads?

I liked ACDSee back in version 2 or so, but then it just kept bloating and bloating. Did they ever scale it back at all? I think I use v2.4 on my laptop, and it's very quick and responsive.

Any of the older Paint Shop Pro versions - I've been using PSP7 for years now for two reasons. One, it has a fantastic image browser and two, it's a really great editor. I'm pretty sure versions 7 and older are freeware now, too.

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.

I can't believe no one mentioned Irfanview yet... it can pretty much do anything. Tiny as hell too.

I was just going to say... first one to mention Irfanview gets a punch in the face.

Why? Because the fucking interface hasn't been updated in ten years. That's why. Completely fucking awful. You have to go into the menus to change the display type, and there's ZERO graphical browsing/organizing capability. I mean, ffs... :x

Also, I really wouldn't recommend ACDsee, because over the years, it has just become more and more bloated. You might as well just use Photoshop or the GIMP if you're willing to use ACDsee. Having a splash/load screen on a simple image viewer is just ridiculous.

Picasa gets excused because of the sheer amount of features it has and metadata it creates, but IMO, it still doesn't get my recommendation if you want to use it for anything other than photos, because that's all it's good for.

edit: Wow, XnView looks pretty decent..

Oh, there is one thing I really DO have to recommend, on a related note: The Windows XP Image Resizer Powertoy.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Just totally useful as heck in every way. It adds a little explorer context menu item to all images in windows, called "resize pictures":

    imrpt.jpg

And then boom, pops up a little dialog letting you choose the size you want to resize it to, with options like resize the original file VS creating a resized copy.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/learnmore/tips/eschelman2.mspx

Just handy as heck, and a snap to use. Honestly, one of the best little utilities I've used in years.
