The PS3 totally smokes my poor computer...I tried running the PC version, and it said it was going to take until July to finish the first work unit. Yikes!
Vicious: You will only pop up on the list after you've completed your first unit for the team, I think.

I had the same problem, but apparently theres a bug in the GUI that misreports the no. of frames to complete for each work unit. It reports that there are 20000, but each frame actually corresponds to roughly 1% of a WU.
Long story short, wait a few hours and the estimated time taken to complete a WU will drop down to a few days.
Vaugely related (since we started talking about folding on the PS3) what out now for the PS3 thats good? I have the cash to buy one now, and I know I'll get one eventually (level 5 RPGs look good, FFXIII, others). So I'm tempted to pick one up, but I don't want to unless I'm gonna get a game or two as well.
The numbers keep going up for the PS3 terraflops. That's mighty impressive. It now has double the computing power of everything else combined. In a mere few hours, it will be all that times two.

At the moment? Not much. Couple of OK games like Resistance: Fall of Man & Motorstorm. You probably need to wait couple of months for big titles.
On April, nothing big really comes out. At least haven't seen any.
May, however is IMO, a good month, with Army of Two (comes also for 360), Spider-Man 3, and Lair. So, if you want some good games, I would wait for May...

Ohh I see. Well, that's a most unfortunate bug. I might have to try out the PC version again then!
As to the existence of two different groups, I think we should press on! They've been around for some time, no reason that us new to the program can't have our own group as well. We'd have a hard time catching up to them besides, so I don't think they'll complain. If we joined them, with their numbers, it'd be like we just got swallowed up or something. Just my opinions of course!

Alrighty - I'd like to congratulate brynstar - aka Xander51 for completing our first work unit. As such, he's also the winner of our first prize pack!
He's won:
A brand new Metal Gear Acid strategy guide!
A collectible Wii sticker!
and a collectible Wii Lanyard!
More prizes and swag to follow - brought to you by Folding Arcadians and ps3arcadians - "because curing cancer is more fun than bitching about console dominance" :P
I'd like to get in on this, too. I hope the other consoles follow suit on this, because I already have them. I used to be a SETI@home fiend, so this is quite a bit cooler.

I downloaded a Windows graphical client, and right now it says it's "Loading... benchmarking..." and the only thing that's changed is "Waiting for Core:" which is on step 10. And I can't figure out how to join a team. Will it let me once the benchmarking is done?
A couple of Xeons, some Pentium D's and a Core 2 duo should be up and running in a few days. Each summer I do a lot of folding during my school break. My current team is so dead, it's time to move on. I'm guessing that there might just be more of community here :-)
Edit: RUN THE Console (ugly) VERSION! It's faster, which equals more points. Also it's easier to manage (IMHO). Please for the love of folding, use the console client (it also gives you the option to install as a service)
-If your PC has multiple cores available (HT also works) you should download a client and copy & paste it into a dedicated directory for each core. One in a directory named FAH1 and one in directory named FAH2 on a dual core system, for example.
-I should mention that it is not recommended to run both the graphical/screensaver and the console client, even with multiple (virtual) cores. In this case it's always recommended to use multiple console clients while Stanford tries to resolve these issues.
Edit:
Here are some instructions for the console flags (makes things run fast, generally speaking)
-verbosity 9, this flag is used to show a more detailed output in the console window, it can come in handy for troubleshooting but it's also nice to see your CPU's benchmark score
-forceasm, this flag will force SSE/3dNow instructions, I recommend using it on any computer equiped with a CPU capable of these instructions as it can give a great speed boost
-advmethods, this flag is to enable the downloading of new work units, these newer units often show unstable or unpredictable behavior but may yield more points per week.
-local, Use configuration files from local directory. This option has no meaning on Linux, but is vital on Windows and Macintosh for running multiple clients on a machine. It instructs the client to read its config information from the client.cfg file in the current directory rather than, on Windows, from the installation directory specified in the registry, or, on Macintosh, the Library/Folding@home directory. Information such as the user name, team name, proxy information, machine ID are maintained in the client.cfg file. The flag ensures that work does not conflict. Use "-local" only if you are planning on running more than one instance of Folding@Home on the same machine (this is only useful if you are running on a multi-processor machine). Create as many directories as there are processors on the machine, copy the exe files and client.cfg file into each of these directories, add the -local on each and specify unique machine IDs for each directory (under the Advanced Settings option). From then onwards you may run each copy by switching to its directory and running with the -local flag.
Basically if you are running on a windows PC, do the following
Setup as many console clients as you have cores
Make sure to install them as services and to give them different machine id #'s
Add -advmethods -forceasm in the registry to speed things up (also use -local if you have multiple clients running on the same machine)
Leave your computer on 24/7
Watch the WU's roll in!

Edit: RUN THE COMMAND LINE (ugly) VERSION! It's faster, which equals more points. Also it's easier to manage (IMHO). Please for the love of folding, use the command line client (it also gives you the option to install as a service)
Yeah, I'm running the console version on my laptop and at work, although I do have the graphical version on my home PC just because it looks kinda cool :rotate:
Hmmm... I wonder if running the command line version through linux is faster than running the graphical version through the PS3 front end. Something to investigate.
Okay, so I've got some news: On behalf of Folding Arcadians and PS3Arcadians I've spent a bit of dosh and I've got some gifts for some milestones. I might do some random draws as well. I have procured:
A Lost Planet Strategy Guide - for our Xboxen Brothers joining us via PC/Mac/Linux Clients
A Final Fantasy III Strategy Guide
A Kingdom Hearts II Strategy Guide
and the Brand New Collector's Edition God of War II Strategy Guide (complete with "The Art of God of War II"). I've got one of these myself, and they're swank.
I also have an original Xbox Live 90 day kit with microphone that I might put up if someone wants it. How does that sound to everyone?

I think the Linux OS on PS3 is limited to 6 or 7 of the cores.
You know I never thought about about doing this stuff -- but after I move into my new apartment, my comp should be up and running 24/7. It's not much, but it will be helpful.

Cheers mate I'm working on getting some more lanyards and other kitschy bits - which, while small, are always fun to have.
My real goal, at this point, is to obtain some beta access to Home for our PS3 users. Can't promise that one, but I'll try as hard as I can
I plan on doing laundry tonight during which time my iMac, my Macbook, my Work PC and my PS3 shall all be crunching away. Folding whilst folding whilst folding whilst folding whilst folding - I have reached multitasking nirvana.
FOLD YOU LITTLE BASTARDS! FOLD WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT!
I've installed the SMP-client but once it runs as a service it doesn't show what it is going on. Is there a way to see if it actually is doing something?
To me, it seems a shame to split the mighty force which is PA. You could combine and post so much larger numbers, together. I know it's about (potentially) curing some bad diseases, but its success derives from its fun, competitive nature.
I left mine on overnight and it finished 1 unit and 25% of another...
But at nearly 200 watts I don't see myself leaving it on all the time.
That's more juice than every light bulb in my house now that I switched them all to CFLs...
Not trying to start anything - it's cool that PS3s crunch this shit so fast - but this would be perfect for WiiConnect24 as it idles (although they would definitely have to turn the fan on) or have those triple 3-ghz 360s crunching on this.
I think they suddenly realized how much bigger their userbase would be on consoles than on PCs, etc.
I'll get my 600mhz P3 and my 1.4GHz duron cracking on this ASAP...
I agree that we could post some big numbers as a unified team, but we've got some team spirit going here now, so I think we'll keep rolling Heck, there are almost a dozen guilds on Dark Iron - I think it should be okay
Besides, we're givin' out PRIZES! (mwahahaha! I'll buy your love yet!)
Well... After looking the other team's stats, I think we should stay separate. We are already building momentum. Honestly the other team doesn't have any major folders, so we should be able to make up the difference with just a few strong folders. Also they don't seem to have an official website (another sign that they are small time). Nothing against them of course but I vote we keep things separate.
I just wish I had a PS3 now..... (at least I have a wii :-)
Threepio, thanks for all your hard work on this and generous donation of prizes! I think having two teams will increase the competitive spirit rather than lessen it, so let's go for it!!! As was mentioned before, this is so much cooler than arguing over which console is better. It's a refreshing change, that I for one embrace.

We've got a home page sitting at PS3arcadians.com. There's a direct link to our team's page there for easy reference. Just to remind those who are interested, the team number is 54717.
Cheers!
Edit: We might have a bit of downtime shortly as I'm switching packages at 1and1. It should be minimal.
