Install it on as many PCs as you'd like gents :)

I've sorted out two new prizes for PC gamers: A copy of WoW (full version), a copy of MageKnight Apocalypse and a copy of The Settlers II. I feel like Santa Claus with lower blood pressure!

heh, nice. I'm running it on my home pc, work pc and work laptop at the moment, but all of those take about 2 days per work unit.

A PC is counted as active if it's returned a work unit in the last 50 days.

a PS3 is counted as active if it's return a work unit in the last 2 days.

Also PS3s can finish a work unit faster than most PCs (I've got a decent system and it takes me ~1.5 days on my Home desktop) they minimum specs that ask for must take like a frigging month to finish a unit.

Estimated date of completion? September. Might as well have just replaced that with an image of Duke Nukem Forever.

Unfortunately there is a bug with the ETA, you have to let it run for a few hours to get the right one.

My PC was saying June sometime when I went to bed last night (I figured there was something screwy and let it run) when I woke up it was about a day on the ETA.

Same here. First mine said July, but after a while it said 2 days or so. I'm running the console version now though (which as far as I can tell has no way to see the ETA...?), because the GUI version was annoying.

Well, if you bring up task manager you should see a process eating all your space CPU cycles.

its pretty low priority so i don't think it would affect Dystopia very much at all..If i'm sitting at my desktop it'll eat 90+% of my cpu..but then i can fire up S.T.A.L.K.E.R and not notice any performance hit compared to when i dont have folding running

You don't need to really disable the program - it only uses up your idle processes.

I'm running on a 600mhz P3, and even though Task Manager is correctly reading 100% cpu usage, I can't tell the difference.

PC now folding. When I get a PS3 in a few years, it shall also be folding. And if they put out something for the 360 or Wii, they will be folding. I don't pay for the power bill after all, college dorms ftw.

Edit: also is there a GPU program for Nvidia cards or is it ATi only?

Double Edit: Hey speaking of college, I should get the word out with flyers and such. Mabye even get my college to get some of the computers they own running the program. There are probably a thousand or so towers (not overtly powerful, but hey) running in my college, and that'd turn a few frames I'm sure.

GPU folding is currently ATI only (x1900 i think). see the FAQ here http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-ATI.html

For the lowdown on your progress, what proteins you are folding, etc. Checkout this program

Electron Microscope (download it at the website below)
    http://www.em-dc.com/

It is just for PC. If you share your FAH directories on a network you can see all your computer's progress. Using Hamachi VPN you do this even behind firewalls and across the internet. If you don't want to worry about a program; in the console version there is a file named "unitinfo.txt" it gives you info on your progress when FAH is in service mode.

hmm.... I want WoW, what do I have to do?

My job entails a seemingly never-ending line of swag, so I don't foresee any reason of stopping. I think we'll do some draws for major milestones - 25, 50, 75 WUs etc. There's no reason you can't get in on it now with the PC/Mac/Linux clients :)

As for the copy of WoW, bluehiro, hopefully you're lucky when the draw comes around :) I'll knock on wood for you. I'm sending out Xander51's (brynstar's) stuff on Monday. If we hit 25 units over the weekend (I think we will) I'll hold a draw (which will consist of myself and... probably my next door neighbor. They're patient folk) for the copy of WoW.

I think we'll establish some ground rules that once you've won a draw, you're out of the running for the next two (just to keep it fair). As Xander51 didn't win a draw, per se, but completed our first unit, he's still in the running :)

I'm glad everyone's enjoying themselves and I want to thank everyone for keeping console politics out of it. Cheers to all our PC/Mac/Linux folken - and thank you to our PS3 users. Everyone is welcome for our grand opening of ps3arcadians.com shortly.

This is pretty cool. I knew my course in bioinformatics would come in handy someday...

This is basically the next step in bioinformatics. We have mapped basically the whole human genome... the next step is to map the protiens that the DNA creates. In the same way that mapping the genome helped us learn about various genetic diseases, learning about the protiens can help us learn about other diseases.

The a longer explination about folding...

Everyone should know we have DNA, which stores information the body uses.

When the body makes proteins it scans along a section of the DNA copies it, and then it eventually is turned into a long strand of amino acids which form the protein.

The protein strand however generally doesn't stay a single long line... due to various forces and bonds, the strand folds in on itself creating a 3d structure.

The structure of the protein can play an important role in its function, so it is useful to find the structure of each protien.

The folding of the protein is self contained... meaning one part of the chain is attracting or repelling another part which causes the structure to form. This fact is important, because since we know all the amino acids in the protien, and we know how the amino acids are likely to interact, we can attempt to predict how it will fold.

The most widely used way to find the structure is to use "X-ray crystallography" to generate a structure for the protien. But it is time consuming and likely expensive.

What the folding program is doing is trying to predict the structure based on what amino acids, and in what order they are in the strand. Doing this requires alot of computational power, hence the need for something like Folding@home.

If you have the GUI version of the application, just do a right-click on the dock icon and select "display protein". There should be a progress bar.

edit: I like the scaleability (is this a word?) of the program. Currently it munches 78% of my CPU power but everything else is still fluid (ok, its intended - I know). I am getting a (used) dual CPU powermac G5 in the next two weeks. Even more number crunching should be doable with this machine.

I thought about getting my PC going again on this after I found out about the ETA bug here, but I've decided my account will strictly be PS3 only. My PC is not on enough during the day to make much of a difference, whereas I can leave the PS3 on all the time. I think it'd be really cool if they made a version for the 360 and the Wii. They both have the capability to do this, right? Maybe if we clamor loud enough? Then every major computing platform could join in.

Folding proteins allows those proteins to work. The three dimensional shape of an enzyme or protein is created by protein folding and most enzymes are unable to work without their three dimensional structure. Denaturing is sometimes referred to as Unfolding. Just thought i'd say because it's not "folding will cure cancer".
