So my company has a dual cpu quad cored(AMD) SBS server that spends most of its time doing fuck all. What the best way to set this thing up so I can switch it on/off easily in case I need to actually use the server for a period of time.

I'm not sure if there's any way to remotely turn clients on and off, I think the only remote application is a viewer that allows you to check the progress of a client. Maybe someone else can help you out and/or correct me.

Install the console client as a service and use windows remote management and the system management services gui to stop and start it. Or RDP in and run the system management services tool. If you are using exchange on that box you might want to leave some cpu overhead available to avoid impinging on exchange's resources.
Edit: I would guess. I run the SMP console client in linux only right now. I'll switch something over to 2008 R2 now that the A5 work units are out.
Heh hurray for A5 bigadv units. I just checked and two systems are 50% of the way through another pair of those units.
AND I have a I7-2600K in my hand with a Spire thermax eclipse V2 cooler just in from Fedex. I wont have the board and memory till monday, but I'm pretty excited.

Impressive! Maybe I should start running bigadv units again, but I'm probably doing too much other work with my machine to make the deadlines.
Sounds like you're on your way to a cool new system there.
Dignified Pauper, yes absolutely, more cores indeed!

I've been folding for several years for another team and have racked up a little over 2,500,000 points. I've recently joined the Penny Arcade team under my screen name. My contributions consist of two PS3's, a few computers at home, and some computers at work.
In simple terms, is there any reason for me to download the new beta client doczero mentioned? If so, would it be advantageous to select GPU mode?
If you could summarize the hardware and operating systems you want to donate processing time on I can make a better recommendation. I have not yet installed the V7 client myself TBH, but I will be trying it on at least one system this week.
If you have configured V6.3 or better clients utilizing all available cores I would say just leave them running.
Thanks. I've been playing around with the V7 client today on three work computers and two laptops, and am about to try it on my quad-core desktop. I'll see if it makes a difference in my production.
I may try out the new client, thanks for posting about them DocZero. I don't really follow the new client releases and instead just tend to stumble upon them.

OK, I put 7 ultimate on the 2600k and the V7 beta client. I know I'm old fashioned, but I don't like it.
I know a couple of my gripes will be fixed when they upgrade the work distribution servers but meh.
Since the client doesn't affect the work that is getting done, just the way you configure and display it, I'll be switching back to command line.

Thanks for the impressions DocZero. Think I'll stick with my command line clients as well.

Sad, at one point I had 54 physical cores folding last week and really didnt notice any points difference.
I'm going to donate some processor time to video rendering projects for a couple weeks via boinc.

The cores will be the same, but it should be easier to configure multiple clients per machine and control them from one place.
