So, What's New in Computer Hardware?

Alright, I've been out of the computer hardware loop for about a year now. My old computer is getting to a point where it no longer functions, so I need a new rig. I really need it by summer for 3d Animation and video-editing work. I basically have no money to do it so I'm looking at a student loan or borrowing a grand from my parents. I'm trying to figure out a rough game plan for an upgrade and what exactly is the best deal on the market right now. My current setup is thus:

512mb of RAM
ASUS K7N-something
Athlon 2800+
Radeon 9800se
Audigy 2ZS Platinum

I was originally planning to a dual Opteron setup, two twin 64bit Opterons. Not sure what AMD has out right now. I was also thinking of getting a X800 Radeon. Keeping the soundcard but I'm not sure what motherboard to get. As I'm doing research on computer hardware, I was wondering what you guys recommended. What are some smokin' deals on AMD? Anything new coming out before summer that'll drive prices down? What would you build for a grand? Should I go with a dual CPU setup or ditch the idea?

Thanks guys.

Intel's Bearlake should be coming right around the corner. It features DDR3 and PCIe2.0 and the prices on Quad Core are about to take a nosedive.

Really? What kind of Quad Cores are out right now? Would you recommend picking up one of those instead of a dual CPU setup?
