Help with a party playlist

JeffHJeffH Registered User regular
edited March 2007 in Help / Advice Forum
Having an apartment warming party soon, looking for good songs for drinking and debauchery. Probably like 25-35 people there, ages generally between 21-27. Musical taste varies pretty widely, so just looking for fun party songs.

Not looking for: Death Metal, hardcore, techno

Songs should preferably be fairly well known

Well, if you are drinking and need music, why not combine the two.

Play my favorite drinking game, "Roxanne".

All you need is to get everybody in a circle. Then, you put on "Roxanne" by The Police.
Every time that Sting sings "Roxanne" somebody drinks. Go one at a time, in a circular fashion.
Fun/drunkenness will ensue. Repeat as necessary.

Additionally, you might want to add these to your party mix:

"Party All the Time" - Eddie Murphy
"The Party's Crashing Us Now" - Of Montreal
"7/4 (Shoreline)" - Broken Social Scene
"The Noise Of Carpet" - Stereolab
"Say it Ain't So" - Weezer
"Plea From a Cat Named Virtue" - The Weakerthans
    "Roses" - Outkast
"Two Words" - Kanye West ft. Mos Def (I'm not the biggest hip-hop fan, but this song is awesome)
"Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" - The Killers
"Jackie Dressed in Cobras" The New Pornographers
"Signs" - Snoop Dogg ft. Justin Timberlake
"Crooked Teeth" - Death Cab for Cutie

I realize that someone already put Roxanne on their list, but I wanted to point out the drinking game!
    Enjoy!

I know you said "no death metal" but the Eagles of Death Metal are actually not a death metal band, but rather a really awesome dancing rock band.

Good party music, I would say, would be their songs I Only Want You and Cherry Cola.

Thanks again for all the suggestions, I will take the time to listen to the clips in Itunes and download what I like. As far as the no death metal, I really have no qualms with recs of other metal bands, but I doubt the girls at the party would love to hear stuff like Cryptopsy or Necrophagist

I like all types of music, but prefer dance/fun stuff for these types of parties. So, in no particular order:

"Faster Kill Pussycat," "Ready, Steady, Go" - Paul Oakenfold
"I Hate Everybody," "Busted Speaker," "Living Sound of Reality" - DeeJay Punk-Roc
    "Ohh La La" - Goldfrapp
"Why You Have to Be Me?" - Whitey
    "Commodore Rock" - Ladytron
"Where's Your Head At," "Jump 'N Shout" - Basement Jaxx
"Robot Rock," "Da Funk," "Musique" - Daft Punk
"Three Little Birdies Down Beats" - Chemical Brothers

Sorry, have to get back to work now. :( I'll try to remember to pull this thread back up over the weekend when I have iTunes open and a beer in hand. :)

But also: thumbs up on MotherFirefly's Teddybears & Iggy suggestion!

But how cool would it be if they did want to hear it? You never know! (although you are more than likely 100% right they would not like those bands).

If you want any of the songs, PM me, I can get some for free because I work at a radio station--we're allowed to give stuff out.

Also, Basement Jaxx is pretty good.

Oh god, YES. Girl Talk is so damn good it's ridiculous. Really good music to hang out to, or get down to.

Also, The Go! Team is really good upbeat music, very suitable for hanging out, although not that well known either.

I cant stress this enough, but a well placed playing of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody is a must. There's nothing like 30 some people singing that classic offkey and drunk.
