European/Australian PS3 Launch

So, the PS3 launched in Australia last night, and should be launching in Europe right about now.

Kotaku headed out to the official Australian launch in Sydney, and they have some pictures up:

Angry gamer scouted out some other launch locations:

The Sydney Morning Herald also covered the launch:

Most stores were virtually deserted, despite the 20,000 pre-orders Sony said it had received.

Even at the official launch event held at Myer's Pitt Street store in Sydney's CBD and attended by Sony's local managing director, Michael Ephraim, media and security outnumbered PS3 fans until at least 11:00pm.

At midnight, about 40 PS3 buyers had arrived to collect their consoles, causing distress for the army of camera crews who turned up expecting to capture launch mayhem.

Desperate producers unashamedly asked the crowd to fake excitement when the cameras were rolling, while a team from 2Day FM let out bogus cheers to convince their radio listeners that a launch extravaganza was underway.

Hopefully the European launches will be a little more lively.

Well, I guess that's not good news for Sony. Can't say I didn't see it coming, though.

I am pretty certain that all major retailers will have plenty of stock. I know that in the past few days most places have still be offering preorders for launch.

edit - any students in the UK after a PS3, remember to go to virgin megastore to get your 10% student discount, even if your not a student, try and get a mate to do it for you!

Not sure what they expected considering their console was in the ballpark of $1000 AUD

Page 4 story in the Times today said there were 3 people queuing up outside the PS3 launch at the Virgin Megastore in London.

They interviewed two out of the three. Both were hoping to resell on ebay.

The funniest thing to me is that the radio and TV crews turned up to cover the launch "extravaganza" and nothing happened.

So they started faking crowd noise and asking passers-by to pretend they were there for the PS3, so they could get a decent interview for the nightly news.

I was heading into town tomorrow for Burnout Dominator and DBZ Budokai Wii. It'll be interesting to see how much PS3 stuff is left. Ireland is very much PlayStation Country, much more than the UK, so this is being treated like the Second Coming round here.

    No wonder they didn't need me at work last night D;

Even The Guide's mostly positive rundown of the PS3 suggested a 'wait and see' approach to buying it on launch.

    Ahh, apathy...

As funny as the non event is, I reserved my 360 and I didn't go to a midnight launch.

If I did do you know how it would of gone?

Get home from work wait till 11 oclock go to store pick up console at 12 then go home again, and go straight to bed because I have goddam work in the morning.

How many students have a spare 1k lying around?
