Getting a custom copper mold made

edited February 2013 in Help / Advice Forum
Trying to do a project, and I think a copper mold would be best suited for this project.
Does anyone have any idea where I can get this accomplished? Looking online returned very little in way of results. Unless someone is like 10 times better at google-fu.
Anyways, if you guys happen to know a place I can get it done in your local area, I'd be down for shipping the model out to them, and paying for the product/shipping back.
I'm in Germany, which seems to limit the avenues I could take to try and track down someone to do this (although I'm sure there is something around here).

There is an American High school here, which I may try and contact the Arts teacher and see if they have any resources for this.

Edit: I suppose it could be some other material, though it would need to be a pretty good thermal conductor.

You may want to consider giving some details as to what this is for. Some folk might have ideas that could help.

Saying this mostly because I have no idea where you can have this done in Germany.

The more I've been looking at doing this, the more I realize its going to be ultra pricey.
I'm basically looking at making a negative mold TARDIS.
I'm looking into Aluminum currently, but I think I have an idea of where to go now.

What material are you planning to cast into the mold? In general, the type of mold required will be dictated by the type of material you're trying to cast into the mold.

(requisite disclosure: I am a technician for a mold materials retailer, but outside of work not liable etc., etc.)

What do you want to mold this out of? The amount of machining doesn't really change between plastic and die cast. The below site specializes in rapid prototyping plastic injection molds and has an outlet in Germany. If you have a CAD model they'll give you a quick quote.

If you don't have a CAD model then you need to add the cost to create one into whatever your pricing is. Pretty much all metal working of complex geometry like mold making is done directly from the CAD information at this point.

In US monies, I don't see any way of getting a metal mold for less than a few thousand dollar if you're very very lucky.

At quick thought you might be able to do this in a simple mold but your parting line would have to be on the diagonal of the police box to deal with the panel and such. Even then what you can actually do might not look quite right.

Yeah, I think I'm just going to have to deal with a once of plaster of paris mold. I was just hoping to try and get something to be reusable if I liked the project and then make a few more for friends/cool peeps. I also wanted to get something that would allow me to better control the cooling process by torching the underside for a bit at a slightly lower than melting point temperature. But I think this could be accomplished with an oven.
    Thanks for the help guys!

Still don't know what you're molding but some of the stuff with home silicone molds might work for you. They are not stupidly expensive, hold detail reasonably well and are reusable.

You can even make a poor man's silicone mold with naught but silicone caulk.
Check it out. Also I make no apologies for the web-0.5-ness of this site. Rob's a cool dude. His site is classic internet. :P
