Looking for a Book Title about Magical Actors

A friend of mine has been searching for a book she read part of and wants to finish, but can't remember the title. So far, this is what we know:

I am looking for a book I once read that I have been searching for for years now. I didn't get a chance to finish it and I do not know the name of the book or author. It's a fantasy book that takes place in another world with actors who are in magic school. The lead character is a bit of a show off and doesn't care for a minor character who wears a mask after having surgery. I am dying to finish this book. If it sounds familiar please tell me the name and author. I have google searched it to death and yahoo asked it but nothing comes up. Help!

Its not that one. That's Hero's die sequel. Its similar. The main character is a young adult and is in this kind of university like school. He is extremely giftes with magic. In one of the earlier scenes of the book the main character walked into a class late while a demonstration was going on, the instructor wantes to teach him a lesson so he put him in the training sequence. i wish i remembered names. I thought i found the book when i came across heros die but there wasnt a wife or anythingike that. 

I read it about 4 years ago when I lived in Phoenix. My sisters friend loaned me a few books to start me on sci-fi/fantasy stuff. One was Eye of the World by Robert Jordan , Song Master by Orson Scott Card and the book I am searching for. I don't remember much anymore. The more I look for it the more I can't remember the names of characters or any super significant details. That one scene in the beginning keeps playing in my head and the fact that the main character hated this other character with the mask and tried to pull it off of him. The scene with the main character going into a training session in front of his class and showing off is usually the best thing I can remember. It's been killing me for a while I can't remember it. I asked the guy who lent it to me but he never replies to me. I thought It might be another Orson Scott Card book but I checked out most of his stuff and nothing struck me as familiar. 

The mask was temporary from what I can remember, from surgery. It was part of a magic that person was learning, I think. It maybe enhanced the magic or something. It takes place in an alternate earth. The characters seem like teens or young adults. It's told from the main characters point of view, I believe. Sorry, it's frustrating for me too. I've been searching for years! 

We have determined that this book is not:
-Blade of Tyshalle
-The Name of the Wind
-Heroes Die
-Ender's Game

Any ideas? We are scratching our heads about this.

It does sound like "The Magicians" except that I am pretty sure that noone with a mask was in it. Or did Penny have to wear one due to some injury for a time? Don't think so, but then again, he is the only character that the main character(Quentin) really dislikes.

they're not actors, though. Plot-wise, it doesn't seem to sync up with the Magicians, and I'm not recalling any particular mask shenanigans in that.

Yeah, she has apparently read The Magicians and it isn't it. On the flip side, that book sounds interesting and I will be picking it up myself.
