Do you like Lego? Would you like to play with it again? Then you need to Minecraft.

Minecraft is a game about squares.

In a world made of blocks, you (a rather blocky person yourself) must use your wits and common sense to build and carve a way to safety. This is a dangerous world, make no mistake – monsters appear from out of the dark, mountains themselves can roar at you, and an errant poke in the wrong direction could bury you alive under tons of soil.

But all is not lost. You’re a smart adventurer, after all. After tearing down some trees with your bare hands and building yourself a rudimentary shelter, you’ll begin to explore the mineral wealth of this new land – iron, coal, gold, and even stranger treasures await you deep in the cores of these mountains. The question is, can you work your way to the heart of the earth, plunder its riches, and return to tell the tale?

Developed by one-man creator Markus Persson (also known as Notch), Minecraft is a Java-based, sandbox-style adventure. It fits squarely among more difficult survival games such as Dwarf Fortress and NetHack, while keeping the simple charm of one’s younger building-block days. It is outwardly simple, internally complex, easy to play, and difficult to master. Perhaps best of all, despite being constructed of laughable square blocks, the game manages to deliver a wonderful atmosphere of fear, paranoia, determination, and reward all in one package.

Where do I play the game?
This game can either be played using a downloadable application or online in your browser.
ONLY Creative Classic is playable in the browser now.

If you want to play creative, play using one of these links: Browser Singleplayer | Browser Multiplayer | CPColin's Client | WoM Client <<May be out of date.
Note: This game mode does not have most of the features that survival does. Notch has favored updating Survival instead. It doesn't have the cool lighting or half the blocks that survival does.

Is it free?
Yes and no. Creative is free and survival is pay-only. When you purchase the game, you get access to Survival and the ability to have a custom player skin, among whatever comes with the game as a whole.

Current Price:€16.95 | US$26.95 | £19.95
Purchase Here
There is also an iOS/Android ($6.99/£4.28/5,49€),XBOX360 Live version (1600 Microsoft Points), and a version for the Raspberry Pi (Free).
Each version is updated different and may be at different points of development, compared to that of the PC version.

What mod did those shelves come from, the ones that actually display your potions and magic cloth and etc? I need to get my hands on that one!

And the bee breeding is addictive. Currently happy about my hell bees breeding up to demonic, my desert bees breeding up to hissing like creepers, and breeding exotics into my jungle bee line.
    The very new BiblioCraft.
Adds shelves, potion shelves, bookshelves, tool racks, display cases, armor stands and labels.
Be aware that it can really mess up your fps, so use sporadically. Removing all shelves and potion shelves from the room in the album brought my fps from 40 to 70.

Building an Apiary is hard. I'm sure people could house bees long before they could build steam engines to power centrifuges to make beeswax for wax capsules to hold seed oil to varnish the wooden base of their apiary.

At work. But I got FTB last night. Holy crap so much stuff added. I literally have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing. The Bee hive things I've found randomly, no idea what to do there. Exploring a few maps, and some of the biomes are Crazy!
Still, getting excited for it. I'm going to try and read through a bit of their wiki later today.

The bees are easily one of the most complicated parts of the mod (Seriously. Bees are complicated.) but the first things you should do after getting a house and some stuff is set up some power and machines to use them. A macerator (runs on EU, made by a coal powered generator at first, then an assorted number of solar panels/watermills/nuclear reactors) and a pulverizer (runs on MJ, made by a truly stunning number of different engines) practically double the ingots you get from your ore, so do try to get one of those up as soon as possible. It will help you immensely.

and here I am, cutting down a goddamn rubber world tree with a few stone axes and scythes. It was growing in such a way that a branch hung over my farm from 20 blocks away
and spiders just kept jumping into my farm. Spent about an hour and a half cutting the bastard down.

but since the area I'm in is coal poor, I just ended up burning stacks of rubber wood lumber into charcoal using a other stacks of rubber wood lumber as fuel.

Also you don't need wax capsules, you just need SOMETHING to hold the seed oil in. I used either a bucket or a glass bottle.

So I downloaded FTB just now. Gonna start playing some again, I think.

Quick question, does anyone know if there is a high-res texture pack that would include every item in one of the packs?
I really like playing with better then default texture size. Though, if I have to, I have to.

EDIT: huh, the FTB launcher comes with a few already installed. (Soartex Fanver looks the most promising.) Do they have all the items of supported modpacks? I'd assume so but ...

There are textures in some of the big packs for most of the most mods, but not some of the smaller/newer mods. I use Sphax because I love it so much, but I know there's a few others around. I think the JohnSmith pack has some FTB support.

Millenaire, though I haven't played much with it. It seems to be a bit buggy, and maybe doesn't play all that well with other mods, but tons of content if you're looking for village building.

Mods man, mods. There's a mod for goddamn everything. You can set up some bees in one house in nice foresty area, connect it with a portal to your ore processing plant and then connect that to your automining quarry, or even your fully programmable and controllable frame base that can fly.

There is exactly one mod that I love so much, that I will never play without it again. It's the one that makes it so when you cut down part of a tree, all the wood blocks above that one also break.

Saves so much time, and feels more reasonable anyway.

TreeCapitator, or Timber. Comes with Technic but not FTB.

I recall the FTB devs saying they'll never add mods like that to their pack because it would invalidate Forestry. You can still add it yourself as a jar mod.

Well yeah, it's supposed to all work together. The things you completely ignore though, are the automated farming machines. What you will need is probably a source of MJ (A type of engine, like steam/magmatic/bio engines), some pipes/conduits to move that power and that's pretty much all. You can entirely ignore the farming aspect if you want.

    So a little flummoxed here.

A friend and I are building a bailey fort quite a distance from the spawn location. We felt it provided the best start up potential with the hillside.

We dug the ground and filled in basically a large area at least 25X25 blocks and 4 blocks deep. We are the tallest area save for part of the hillside we carved out for the northside.
Even then it's level at best to us. The only access to the place is via four ladders and then gates.
I think I got enough torches all over the place, but somehow spiders and creepers still get in... I get the spiders, they can climb, but I lost a lot of materials due to the creeper.
What's the torch to space density I need to keep mobs from spawning?

I feel like taking pictures would provide a better idea of what's going on...

At work, so I can't check the wiki but I think it was one torch every 8 blocks in a straight line. Not sure if middle of an 8x8 square would work though. Turning off shaders helps seeing where your problem spots may be.
    Pictures would be helpful.
