Please recommend me a new wireless router

LewieP's MummyLewieP's Mummy Registered User regular
My router sucks, big time. I keep losing internet connection, and when I troubleshoot it tells me to unplug the router. AGAIN. I'm getting pretty fed up of it, and think I need to buy a new one. My current one is a Netgear 54 Mbps wireless ADSL Modem Router DG834G v3 if that helps. It is passworded, I know no-one is piggybacking onto it, and mine is the only PC that uses the network - plus 3 smart phones and a PlayBook.

I don't really care what router I have, I need wireless for the phones, and although I don't have an unlimited budget, I do have enough money to buy a decent one.

So, please recommend me a new router, thank you!

Can you quickly confirm that this is both your modem and your router?

Looking it up, it's a combo unit, so I'm assuming it is, but my recommendations are going to differ greatly if you're just using it for a router, and have a separate modem.

Here is a 100% correct recommendation for every single person who needs any sort of internet equipment: not a Belkin.

Well, that's a start - I now know what not to buy, but what about what to buy?

I've never had an issue with any Linksys (Cisco) router I've used. Mind you, I've never used a combo unit so I've never used any of these specific units.

I had really good luck with D-Link ADSL/Router combos when I had DSL.

    YMMV.

Just a heads-up, Linksys was sold to Belkin, though they seem to still be under Cisco for now.

Here in the states, Cisco's E series is pretty well reviewed, so the E3000 linked above is probably OK.

I have a non-modem version of that series that I like quite a bit.

Cisco makes quality stuff. Hard to not like them or recommend them.

Anything manufactured by D-Link. Everything I've purchased from them has been reliable, and surprisingly durable.

I am digging my "ASUS RT-N16", bone stock. I was planning on installing DD-WRT on it, but I see no need. Gigabit internal network is what I am talking about. Fån†åš†¡¢ røu†€r!
