First Time Game Engine recommendations
I was thinking of tinkering around with some 2D based game engines (I figured 2D would be easier to handle for a first time, plus I am more interested in SNES Style quality), and possibly make something during my free time. However, I have no idea where to start and thought maybe someone here would know a good starter engine/tutorial I could follow. As of now, I am looking at Torque 2D by the garage games people, but if anyone here has a better recommendation, I'd like it a lot.
I didn't post this in the Indie/Game discussion sections since I figured those forums were more dedicated to completed projects then help discussion.

Torque 2d is great (I am currently working on a game)
HTML 5 (free)
Flash (download some Game libraries)
Not at all! I'm sure some of us in this thread can help - I'm more of a 3d guy these days, but plenty of people are doing 2d stuff. http://forums.penny-arcade.com/discussion/116540/game-development-omni-thread-unity-xna-udk-etc/p1
